Families suffered- men ashamed they lost their job- abuse, women paid less for work, children had poor diets and many needed to leave school to work

Farmers were hurting as they were in debt and food prices were going down. Stock market crash, problem of easy credit, aging factories, bank failures

Germany wanted to overrun France and then fight Russia. They were stopped by the BR. and FR. The fighting continued in trenches (France)

Govt. role should be to get groups to work together- encourage private groups to provide services (food/shelter). Began public works programs- govt construction of roads, bridges, etc. Finally- he had the govt take a more active role- too late and he lost the election of 1932 to Franklin Roosevelt.

Urban hispanics and African Americans suffered greatly- jobless, violence "scapegoats" in some areas Many (400,000) farmers lost their farms (mortgaged) as food prices dropped
