Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in the summer of 1941 and german troops advanced rapidly. But an early winter and fierce Russian resistance halted the german advance. This was the first time the german military had been stopped.

France believed Germany would attack France from their borders alongside Germany and put heavy defensive station along that entire border (the Maginot Line), but the Germans instead interest France by going through Belgium where they had no defense.
