An ionic bond results from electrical attraction between

cations and anions

As the electronegativity difference between bonded atoms decreases, the bond because more

covalent (Difference increases--> become more ionic)

You can estimate the degree to which a bond between two atoms is ionic or covalent by calculating the

difference in the atom's electronegativity

A non polar covalent bond is unlikely when two atoms of different elements join because the atoms are likely to differ in

electronegativity

The measure of an atom's ability to attract electrons is its

electronegativity

Ionic bonds form as a result of the electrostatic attraction between

ions

Atoms that are bonded with an electronegativity difference of 0 to 0.3 are generally considered to be

no polar covalent compounds

What is the apparent charge on the chlorine atom in the molecule HCI

partially negative

the charge on an ion is either

postive or negative

When an atom completely gives up its valence electrons to another atoms, they form a bond that is considered to be

purely ionic

A covalent bond is formed when two atoms

share one or more pairs of electrons with each other

Two atoms will likely form a polar covalent bond if the electronegativity difference is between

0.3 to 1.7

Atoms seldom exist as independent particles in nature because

atoms are more stable when they combine with other atoms

Use the table below to choose the pari of elements that will most likely have the least ionic character.

Cl and O (smalles difference)

Use the table below to choose the pair of elements that will most likely have the greatest ionic character

K and N (biggest difference)

A single covalent bond involves the sharing of

two electrons
