Peer to Peer Network

Hosts both provide and consume network services. Function both as a client and a server at the same time. Have to have the same OS system. Need to back up each individual system

Protocol

Agreed upon standard of how you're going to format information. Very important

What factor usually causes LANs to have a higher bandwidth than WANs?

Because of the distances involved

Why are protocols important for networking?

Enable the hosts to speak the same language

Star topology

All the hosts on a network connect to a central connecting device.

Components of a Network

Computer systems, network devices(switches, routers, transmission medium, network interface, protocol

What are the advantages of a client/server network when compared to a peer-to-peer network?

Easier to support because the services are centralized. Easier to back up data. Scalable.

Logical Topology

How data may flow on the network(rules of the road, road analogy). How it actually operates

LAN

Local Area Network, small geographic area.

Client Server Nework

Network hosts have specific roles assigned to them. A client does not provide network services, it consumes it. Client is routed through a server and server is connected to peripherals. The server has special optimized operating systems.

Ring network topology

No central connecting medium. Point-to-point connections between network hosts, can only communicate directly to two other hosts. Not common.

In what ways does a network benefit a company? What is the main drawback to implementing a network?

Peripheral sharing, consolidated network storage, increased communication(email, webpage, etc). Increased productivity and collaboration. Drawback is cost

Mesh Topology

Point to point connection between each and every host. Not very feasible

WAN

Wide Area Network, group of interconnected LANs that are separated geographically

Ad Hoc Wireless Network

No central connecting point, every wireless host communicates directly with any other wireless host(similar to peer-to-peer ).

Network Bandwidth

Rating of how much data can be sent over a network

Physical Topology

The way the computer network is wired(analogy-roads in the town where you live)

Wireless Technology and Mesh topology

Use a radio signal instead of actual wires. Most networks are not set up this way (star topology)
