Chapter 7
Electrical Engineers
-A circuit schematic -Circuit board layout
The standard views used in an orthographic projection are:
-Front view, Top view, and Right side view. -The remaining 3 views usually don't add any new information.
The front view shows the most features or characteristics of the object.
-It usually contains the least amount of hidden lines. -The front view is chosen first and the other views are based on the orientation of the front view.
View Alignment
-It usually contains the least amount of hidden lines. -The front view is chosen first and the other views are based on the orientation of the front view.
Civil Engineers
-Plans for a bridge -Road layout
Glass Box Method.
-The object is placed in a glass box. -The sides of the box represent the 6 principal planes. -The image of the object is projected on the sides of the box. -The projection planes, the projectors, how surfaces A and B are projected. -The box is unfolded creating the 6 principal views.
What is Engineering Graphics?
A Set of rules and guidelines that help you create an Engineering Drawing.
What is an Engineering Drawing?
A drawing that communicates an idea or design.
Key points
An orthographic projection is a 2-D representation of a 3-D object.
8. How do you modify the sheet size in Autodesk Inventor?
Autodesk Inventor allows us to generate 2D engineering drawings from solid models so that we can plot the drawings to any exact scale on paper. In AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor, two-dimensional sheet of paper is known as paper space.
3. What information is missing in the front view? Top view? Right view?
Dashed lines are used to indicate edges of the design that are not visible in the specific view direction.
Mechanical Engineers
Detailed drawing of a part that needs to be machined.
2. What is the purpose of creating 2D orthographic views?
Each orthographic view is a two-dimensional drawing showing only two of the three dimensions of the three-dimensional object.
6. Explain the creation of 2D views using the 1st Angle Projection method.
First-angle orthographic projection is commonly used in countries (Europe ) that use the metric (International System of Unites: SI) system as the primary units of measurement. First-angle orthographic projection is a type of Orthographic Projection, which is a way of drawing a 3D object from different directions. Usually a front, side and top view are drawn so that a person looking at the drawing can see at the important sides.
What will we learn in Chapter 1?
How to create an orthographic projection.
7. Explain the creation of 2D views using the 3rd Angle Projection method.
In United States, the third-angle projection is commonly used in Engineering Drawings. In third-angle projection, the image planes are placed in between the object and the observer. And the views are formed by projecting to the image plane located in front of the object.
5. How do you decide which views are necessary for a multi-view drawing?
In creating multiview orthographic projection, different systems of projection can be used to create the necessary views to fully describe the 3D object. Two perpendicular planes (horizontal and vertical planes) are established to from the image planes for a multiview orthographic projection.
1. Explain what an orthographic view is and why it is important to engineering graphics.
Orthographic is derived from the word orthos meaning perpendicular or 90 degrees. It is important to engineering Graphics since the projection of one face of an object usually will not provide an overall description of the object; other planes of projection must be used.
The Six Principal Views
The 6 principal views are created by looking at the object, straight on, in the directions indicated.
How do we create the 6 principal views?
The Glass Box Method.
4. Which dimension stays the same in between the Top view and the front view?
Top and front views have the same length.
Standard Views
When constructing an orthographic projection, we need to include enough views to completely describe the true shape of the part. Complex part is more views, and Simple part is less views.
