Double Major

Grade Point Average (GPA)

A numeric average in which letter grades are transformed into numbers.

Minor

A secondary specialization in a discipline different from one's major.

Major

A specialization in a particular subject area, requiring a set course of study.

College Advisor

An individual who provides students with advice about their academic careers.

Service-learning

Courses that allow a student to engage in community service activities while getting course credit for the experience.

Electives

Courses that are not required.

Prerequisites

Requirements that must be fulfilled before a student may enroll in a course or discipline.

Unique Major

Specialization in a particular subject area that is geared to the student's own needs. Not offered by all colleges, and generally requires the support of faculty to oversee the process.

Registrar

The college official designated to oversee the scheduling of courses, the maintenance of grades and transcripts, and the creation and retention of other official documents.

Distance Learning

The teaching of courses at another institution, with student participation via video technology or the web.
