Why did Islamists support secular government and culture in the Muslim world?

A lot of people were against secular government and culture in the Muslim world because they felt it undermined Islamic society. Based on Quran, they called for a return to Sharia (Islamic Law). They blamed social and economic ills on the West. The only way to improve conditions was to have a renewed commitment to the Islamic doctrine. To deal with the social and economic changes happening, Muslims took in the Islamist movement happening. Most Muslims opposed Islamic extremist.

An influx of Palestinians in Lebanon made it so that Lebanon's muslim population outnumbered Christians. Tensions increased as PLO guerrilla disguised as refugees than crossed the border to attack Israel.

What were Ayatollah Khomeini's reasons for opposing the Shah?

Ayatollah Khomeini was a leader that condemned Western influences and accused the Shah of violating Islamic law. Many protests going on drove the Shah form power. Khomeini and his people proclaimed an Islamic republic as well. The new government was a theocracy (government led by religious leaders).

Why did many people around the world support a Jewish homeland in Palestine?

During the Holocaust, Jewish people had horrible experiences so this led to people supporting a Jewish homeland. As a result of WWI, France and Britain were given mandates (authorization) over parts of the Middle East. After WWII, Holocaust survivors and Jews migrated to Palestine. In part of the Palestine Mandate Britain supported a Jewish national homeland. In 1947, the UN wanted to split Palestine into 2 areas for the Jews and Arabs. Fighting took place showing that the Arabs wanted Palestine for themselves. The outcome resulted in Jews winning and many Palestine Arabs fleeing their homes.

Why has conflict persisted in Iraq since the defeat of Saddam Hussein?

Iraq was trying to be rebuilt and was hampered by guerrilla attacks and suicide bombings. Insurgents (rebels from Shiite and Sunni groups) targets civilians and government workers.

What obstacles have prevented peace between Israel and Palestines?

There are many obstacles that have prevented peace among Israel and Palestines. There has been decade upon decades of conflict and mistrust that have made peace hard to achieve, Land claims was a major issue. Palestines were forced off their lands and want to be able to return and resettle in Israel. Israelis opposed this right. The next obstacle is the issue of Jewish settlements in the West Bank (area claimed by Palestinians). Finally the last obstacle to peace was the stumbling block of Palestinians wanted East Jerusalem to be the capital to any Palestinian state, while Israel wanted it to be the capital of Israel.
