chemiosmosis
experiments providing evidence for chemiosmosis (4)
-outer membranes of mitochondria removed leaving the inner membranes intact. when protons were added, ATP synthesis increased -when isolated chloroplasts were illuminated, medium in which they were suspended became alkaline -isolated chloroplasts kept in the dark and transferred first to a low ph medium (to acidify thylakoid interior) then to an alkaline medium. they spontaneously synthesised atp → no light needed
where does chemiosmosis occur?
in the membranes of mitochondria, the chloroplasts of plants, and across the plasma membrane of bacteria
peter mitchell's theory on chemiosmosis
that as all living cells have membrane potential, electrochemical cells could be used to do work i.e. provide the energy for atp synthesis
2 main components of chemiosmosis?
the electron transport chain atp synthase enzyme
what does chemiosmosis involve?
the establishment of a proton gradient, to drive facilitated diffusion of protons via ATP synthesise channels, to catalyse ADP + Pi → ATP
what is chemiosmosis?
the process by which electron transport is coupled to ATP synthesis
