Education

An educational Web site offers exciting and challenging avenues for formal and informal teaching and learning. Many of the Web sites included as links at this textbook's companion Web site are educational Web sites.

Entertainment

An entertainment Web site offers an interactive and engaging environment. Popular entertainment Web sites offer music, videos, sports, games, ongoing Web episodes, sweepstakes, chats, and more. Sophisticated entertainment Web sites often partner with other technologies. For example, you can cast your vote about a topic on a television show.

News

A news Web site contains newsworthy material including stories and articles relating to current events, life, money, sports, and the weather.

Personal

A personal Web Site that might be a single Web page or a collection of Web pages maintained by a private individual or a family not usually associated with any organization.

Portal

A portal is a Web site that offers a variety of Internet services from a single, convenient location. Most portals offer free services including search engine and/or subject directory, news, sports and weather, and many other services, Many portals have online communities, which are Web sites that join specific groups of people with similar interest or relationships.

Player

A program that can play audio files on your computer.

Plug-in

A program that extends the capability of the browser.

Real Simple Syndication (RSS)

A protocol that allows users to receive new audio files automatically from a feed they are subscribed to.

Mail server

A server that contains users' mailboxes and associated e-mail messages.

Thumbnail

A small version of a larger graphical image that usually you can click to display the full-sized image.

Search Engine

A specific type of search tool that finds Web sites, Web pages, and Internet files that match one or more keywords you enter.

Subject directory

A type of search tool that allows users to navigate to areas of interest without having to enter keywords.

Username

A unique combination of characters that identifies you, and it must differ from other usernames located on the same mail server.

Podcast

Recorder audio, usually and MP3 file, stored on a Web site that can be downloaded to a computer or a portable media player such as an iPod.

Media Sharing Web site

Specific type of online social network that enables members to share media such as photos, music, and videos. Flickr, Fotki, and Webshots are popular photo sharing communities; PixelFish and Youtube are popular video sharing communities.

Marquee

Text that is animated to scroll across the screen; can serve as a ticker to display stock updates, news, school sports scores and events, or weather.

Animation

The appearance of motion created by displaying a series of still images in rapid sequence.

Streaming

The process of transferring data in a continuous and even flow.

Virtual Reality (VR)

The simulation of a real or imagined environment that appears as 3D

E-mail (Electronic Mail)

The transmission of messages and files via a computer network.

Video

Video consists of full-motion images that are played back at various speeds.

QuickTime

View animation, music, audio, video, and VR panoramas and objects directly on a Web page.

Flash Player

View dazzling graphics and animation, hear outstanding sound and music, display web pages across and entire screen.

Acrobat Reader

View, navigate, and print Portable Document Format (PDF) files - documents are formatted to look just as they look in print.

Animated GIF

A group of several images combined into a single GIF file.

Windows Media Player

Listen to live and on-demand audio, play or edit WMA and MP3 files, burn CDs, and watch DVD movies.

RealPlayer

Listen to live and on-demand near-CD-quality audio and newscast-quality video, stream audio and video content for faster viewing, play MP3 files, create music CDs.

Graphic/Graphical Image

A digital representation of nontext information such as a drawing, chart, or photograph.

Audio

A music, speech, or any other sound.

VR World

A 3D site that contains infinite space and depth

Video blog (Vlog)

A blog that contains video clips

Blog

A blog, short for Weblog, is an informal Web site consisting of time-stamped articles, or posts, in a diary or journal format, usually listed in reverse chronological order. Blogs have become an important means of worldwide communications. Teachers create blogs to collaborate with other teachers and students.

Buisness

A business Web site contains content that promotes or sells products or services and most businesses have a business/marketing Web site. Many of these companies also allow you to purchase their products or services online.

Content Aggregator

A business that gathers and organizes Web content and then distributes, or feeds, the content to subscribers for free or a fee. Examples of distributes content include news, music, video, and pictures.

Wiki

A collaborative Web site that allows users to create, add to, modify, or delete the Web site content via their Web browser. Most wikis are open to modification by the general public. A popular wiki is Wikipedia, a free Web encyclopedia.

E-mail address

A combination of a username and a domain name that identifies the user so he can both send and receive messages.

Microblog

Allows users to publish short messages, usually between 100 and 200 characters, for others to read. Twitter is a popular microblog.

Streaming Video

Allows you to view longer or live video images as the video file downloads to your computer.

Advocacy

An advocacy Web site contains content that describes a cause, opinion, or idea. These Web sites usually present views of a particular group or association.

Informational

An informational Web site contains factual information. Many US government agencies have informational Web sites providing information such as census data, tax codes, and the congressional budget.

Multimedia

Combination of graphics, animation, audio, video, 3-D modeling, and virtual reality (VR).

Search Tools

Enable users to locate information found at Web sites all over the world

Java

Enables Web browser to run programs written in Java, which adds interactivity to Web pages.

Streaming Audio

Enables you to listen to the sound file as it downloads to your computer.

Shockwave Player

Experience dynamic interactive multimedia, 3-D graphics, and streaming audio.

Silverlight

Experience high-definition video, high-resolution interactive multimedia, and streaming audio and video.

Web Application (Web App)

Web Site that allows users to access and interact with software through a Web browser or any computer or device that is connected to the Internet. Examples of Web applications include Google Docs, TurboTax Online, and Windows Live Hotmail.

Online Social Network

Web site that encourages members in its online community to share their interests, ideas, stories, photos, music, and videos with other registered users. Most include chat rooms, newsgroups, and other communications services. Popular social networking Web sites include Facebook and MySpace.

Mailbox

Where your ISP's software stores the message received by E-mail.

E-mail program

You can create, send, receive, forward, store, print, and delete messages.
