Who was the 1st Pope?

Peter

Matthew's gospel intentions: 3 themes

- Jesus is the messiah - Jesus was accepted by Gentiles, rejected by Jews - Jesus is "the new Moses"

Jesus' relationship with his disciples was different. What was different in the way they were chosen?

Jesus' disciples didn't choose him; he called them( he chose people that weren't exactly holy or knowledgeable of the faith)

Economic power

Jesus' messiahship was not to be based on his ability to provide for the material wants and needs of the people(symbolized by turning stones into bread). Rather he came to provide for the spiritual hunger of the people by proclaiming the word of God, which offers true life

Matthews intention Jesus is " the new Moses"

Matthew filled his entire infancy account with quotes and images form the Scriptures, all of which would have held a deeper meaning for his Jewish readers(writing to Jewish brothers and sisters); Matthew recognized Jesus as "the new Moses," one who totally fulfilled the Law, the Messiah, who would lead the people to salvation

Matthews intention Jesus was accepted by Gentiles, rejected by Jews

Matthew included the story of the magi, non-Jewish men who were members of the priestly caste of Persians and who served as chaplains to an representatives of the Persian royalty

Luke had a different audience and message in mind as he wrote his story of the birth and early years of Jesus; what were they?

though Luke made it clear that Jesus was the Messiah, he did not use a lot of quotes from the Old Testament. Luke's readers, who were Gentiles, would not have been as concerned about this as Matthew's Jewish readers

Beyond what Matthew and Luke tell us about Jesus' birth and early years, much of his life prior to his public ministry is.......

Unknown to us

Where does the word apostle come from?

A greek word meaning "to send forth." Jesus commissioned these men to go out and carry on his Good News about the Kingdom of God.

Following his baptism, what did Jesus become?

A wandering preacher and religious teacher; even though jesus was probably not a war I in an official or legal sense, in many ways his ministry appears similar to a rabbi's(called him a rabbi)

Jesus' birth date

Around 6 or 5 BCE, during the reign of Herod the Great; Herod died in the year 4 BCE so we know jesus was born before that

We cannot understand any of the events described in the Gospels without......

Asking questions about the meaning of Jesus and his message as understood by writers of the Gospels

Symbolism of the voice from the heavens in the baptist accounts

At times in the Old Testament, God is depicted as speaking to the people in a voice from the heavens. Often God is concealed by a cloud.

Why did jesus accept the baptism according to Matthew

Because "it is proper for us in this way to fulfill al righteousness." That is, Jesus saw the act as part of God's plan, and he accepted it on that basis

Luke's version of genealogy:

Begins with Jesus and works all the way back to Adam

The disciples of Jesus were not only expected to watch and learn from Jesus, but were actually........

Called to share in his mission of proclaiming the kingdom

Rabbis at the time of jesus

Called to study the Jewish Bible and the teaching of other rabbis thoroughly. When they taught, they were expected to back up what they were saying with direct quotes from the scriptures or statements from other respected rabbis; typical for a rabbi to attract disciples who would study under him

What was Jesus' Father's (Joseph) job?

Carpenter

What is the sign of the convent with Abraham?

Circumcision

Jesus was very religious man. He was a man of..............

Deep prayer, as is constantly reflected in the gospels. He had an intense religious awareness, understanding of God and God's relationship with men and women that would one day put him in direct conflict with his people, friends, perhaps even his family

The Gospels are the........

Documents that ultimately serve as the foundation and source of the Christian understanding of Jesus.

The powers jesus refused to exercise throughout his ministry

Economic power, magical power, political power

Mark's Gospel details:

First gospel to be written, directed to non-Jewish Christians, stressed humanity and suffering of Jesus

Synoptic Gospels

From the Greek for "seeing the whole together," the name given to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, because they are similar in style and content.

In Matthew's account, how did jesus respond to all 3 temptations?

Giving direct quotes from the Book of Deuteronomy, which I'd part of Old Testament." 1. "'One does not live by bread alone, /but by every word that comes from the mouth of God'"(Deuteronomy 8:3); 2. '"Do not put the Lord your God to the test"(Deuteronomy 6:16); 3. '"Worship the Lord your God,/ and serve only hum'" (Deuteronomy 6:13)

Jesus had a good education and knew three languages because of where he lived and historical setting. What were they?

Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic(common language of Palestine)

At the time of Jesus' circumcision, he was given.....

His name: Jesus; popular name meaning "Yahweh saves" or "Yahweh is salvation"

Meaning of the story of the Magi?

Illustrates a major point that Matthew wished to make: Jesus as the Messiah was accepted by many Gentiles and rejected by many jews. The story of the Magi makes that point in a memorable way.

Matthew and Luke expand the scene of Jesus in the desert and describe a 3-fold temptation that jesus experiences while in the desert. What are the 3 temptations

In Matthew's gospel, the tempter asks Jesus to turn stones into bread, then to throw himself for a high point of the Temple and have God catch him(in order to prove his special relationship with God ), and finally to fall at the feet of the devil and worship him, for which Jesus would then receive "all the kingdoms in the world." In Luke's gospel, the order of the 2nd and 3rd temptation is reversed, but the content is the same

What was special about the apostles?

In a special way, the 12 shared Jesus' power, and after his death and resurrection they continued, in his name, to preach, to heal, and to make disciples through baptism

In their infancy narratives, Matthew and Luke may have moved beyond historical concerns all together, focusing......

Instead on insights into the origins of Jesus that only people of faith would be concerned about

In the gospel of john, from the beginning jesus.......

Is divine

Jesus taught with unique authority

Jesus amazed the crowds not only with the content of his message but also with the attitude he possessed while sharing it. Jesus claimed himself as the sole judge of the truth of what he taught. This was a clear break from common practice and, and it bot attracted and alienated many people who listened to him preach

Matthew's and Luke's infancy narratives tell us more about........

Jesus as the Christ of Faith as they do about the historical aspects of Jesus' birth. Matthew and Luke wanted to teach the following main points about Jesus as the Christ of Faith through their infancy narratives.

The special role of the 1st disciples of Jesus lends insight into what it means to be a disciple of his today. In what way?

Jesus calls each Christian to a personal, lasting relationship of love with God, and Jesus also sends his followers out to share in his mission of proclaiming the Kingdom

The 12 apostles: how they came to be

Jesus carefully selected special men who were to play a central and significant role during his ministry and in the future. These men were the Apostles, most frequently referred to in the gospels as the 12. They're not mentioned in johns gospel at all.

Jesus claimed a special role

Jesus claimed for himself a special role as the one who would personally establish and embody the kingdom, not only announce it.

Jesus used parables and performed miracles

Jesus differed dramatically from the other teachers of his time because of his use of parables and in the miracles he performed

Jesus refused the messiahship expected by his people

Jesus flatly rejected the political and militaristic messiahship that the Jewish people had come to expect. The story of the 3 temptations illustrates this point quite well, for it deals with the kinds of power that jesus refused to exercise throughout his ministry

Mark's account of Jesus' baptism

Jesus is baptized and then he sees "the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him." A voice comes from the heavens, saying, " You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."

Matthews accunt of Jesus' baptism

Jesus is baptized only after some disagreement with John about whether John should baptize him. After the baptism, Jesus sees "the Spirit of God descending like a dove," and a voice from the heavens proclaims, " This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." (When Matthew written, may had a copy of mark)

Luke's account of Jesus' baptism

Jesus is seen at prayer after the baptism has taken place, and it is then that the Spirit descends upon him " in bodily form like a dove." A voice form the heaven proclaims, " You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."

2 chief lessons Jesus learned from his baptism

Jesus recognized that he was chosen in a special way to proclaim and begin a new kingdom; Jesus learned that he would be given the power to fulfill his role through the Spirit of God , represented by the descending dove.

Political power

Jesus' messiahship was not to be based on political power(symbolized by to worship devil and control all kingdoms of world). Jesus said that God alone was to be worshipped and that the Reign of God in the world would take place in the hearts of the people, not in political domination of them.

The prologue in John

John speaks of the origins of jesus and the nature of his ministry in a complex, poetic, highly philosophical prelude of his Gospel; written after the rest of the book had been completed

John's Gospel and jesus' Baptism

John's Gospel doesn't describe the baptism of jesus, However, it does include a passage of testimony by John the Baptist that seems to echo the baptism scenes of the synoptic Gospels. The passage includes some language that contemporary Catholics hear during the Mass when Jesus is referred to as "The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world."

Why did the evangelists use the symbolism of the dove and the voice?

Likely to express Jesus' interior experience of God during his baptism

Which evangelist is the only one to offer the familiar story of Jesus at age 12 when his parents lose track of him during a trip to Jerusalem and find him in the temple?

Luke

Which gospel do you get the Hail Mary?

Luke

What was Luke's reason for including the Shepherds in his story?

Luke's Gospel stresses the Good News is for everyone, especially the poor and downtrodden; he included the shepherds indicating that the poor would be the first to recognize and respond to Jesus.

Magnifat

Lukes Gospel; Prayer which reads Mary's response to the realization that she is to bear a special son. Mary's prayer is a collection of many verses from the Old Testament

The development if the baptism accounts from Mark to Luke and Matthew

Mark is straight forward and direct in describing the scene, while Matthew introduces the disagreement with John the Baptist over whether Jesus should be baptized at all. Luke almost skips over the actual baptism and shows jesus in prayer after the event , and john does not give a direct account of Jesus' baptism

Matthews intention Jesus is the Messiah

Matthew refers to Jesus as " the son of David, the son of Abraham." Then he starts with Abraham and works his way up to Jesus

3 wise men

Matthew, men were kings, named: Gaspar, Melchior, Balthasar; commonly understood to be astronomers who observed and tried to interpret the movement of the stars; the star they saw may have been the planets Jupiter and Saturn coming close together

Magical power

Nor was Jesus' messiahship to be based on magic tricks don to impress people and almost force them to believe in him(symbolized by throwing himself off top of temple and surviving). Jesus responded o the temptation by saying that God does not reveal divine power through trickery and magic. Jesus never works miracles simply to impress people but only to bring good into the world

John's Gospel details:

Offers profound portrait of Jesus as the Messiah and divine Son of God, often expressing that conviction through poetic and symbolic languages and stories; last gospel written, reflects many years of prayerful rejection about the nature of Jesus and his message

John the Baptist

One of the many wandering prophets at the time of Jesus, he was different because he didn't proclaim himself as the Messiah, Savior, or Liberator yearned for by the Jewish people; John the Baptist's task was to prepare the way for Jesus' ministry by calling people to an awareness of their sin and to repentance . The sign john used to express this change of heart, this openness of mind and spirit, was a ritual bathing called baptism

Who is mentioned more than any other disciple?

Peter

Jesus told his disciples no to take the title.....

Rabbi, because their only basis of authority came from their relationship with him

Jesus can.....

Relate to us

Baptism is a....

Sacrament

Jesus is One with us in all things but....

Sin

Matthews version of genealogy:

Starts with Abraham and works his way up to Jesus

Nova

Super-bright explosion of a star

The Gospels are not biographies of Jesus. They are.......

Testimonies of faith, proclamations of the Good News written by people after they had experienced jesus as the risen Lord.

Luke's intention

The Good News is for Everyone

The 12 echoed the 12 tribes of israel

The Israelites at one time consisted of 12 tribes, each descending from one of the 12 sons of jacob. It seems certain that the early Christian community recognized 12 Apostles to suggest that they would be the foundation of a new community of faith, a new israel, what we call today the Christian Church.

" The new Israel" did not fail:

The Israelites were severely tempted in the desert, and they ultimately failed to stay true to God. Jesus, ad "the new israel," was tempted also, but didn't fail

What comes after the preface about John the Baptist in Luke?

The angel Gabriel's announcement to Mary that she will bear a son named Jesus, who will be called the "Son of the most high." Catholics celebrate event today with Fest of the Annunciation, March 25

Symbolism of the dove in the baptist accounts

The dove was often a symbol for israel as a whole, and less often, a symbol for the Spirit of God

Where did Jesus' strong Jewish faith come from?

The faith of his parents; Joseph and Mary were devout Jews, and the Jewish family was recognized as a religious community itself.the family of Jesus was most likely deeply prayerful and committed to following faithfully not only the Law but also the spirit of the Jewish religion

Adam

The first man, father of all people, not just Jews, connects everybody

What does the gospel of Matthew contain?

The magis

Jesus proclaimed the kingdom of God

The notion of such a kingdom was a central one for the Jewish people of his day, so it was not surprising in itself that Jesus would speak of it. But his sense of the kingdom was truly different

What does the gospel of Luke contain?

The sheppards

The reasons for the differences in the infancy narratives

The writers were trying not so much to provide historical facts but to explain the significance of historical events

What were the Magi known for?

Their understanding of astrology and the occult, the mysterious dimension of life

Why were the gospels written?

To guide the eagerly church and its members

How does Luke start his infancy narrative?

With events that happened before Jesus was born, mainly dealing with Jesus' announcer, John the Baptist

Luke's Gospel details:

Written about 15 years after Mark's, directed to Gentiles, emphasized that the Good News of jesus is offered to all people- rich, poor, men and women, Jews and Gentiles

Matthew's Gospel details:

Written not long after Luke's, directed to devout jews, stressed conviction that Jesus fulfilled the Law of Moses and was the Messiah the Jews had been awaiting.

Genealogy of Jesus

a significant part of the infancy narrative in Matthews gospels, which designates Jesus as a descendent of Abraham and David

The infancy narratives

the accounts of Jesus' birth and childhood found in the first two chapters of the Gospels of Matthew and Luke
