Printer
An output device that produces text and graphics on a physical medium such as paper ("hardcopy"). The output is a "permanent" copy of the information on the media. This is an output device.
Ink‐jet printer
An output device that sprays droplets of ink to produce images on paper.
Laser printer
An output device that uses toner powder and technology similar to that of a photocopier to produce images on paper.
Input device
Any hardware component that allows users to enter data and instructions into a. Examples of input devices are: keyboard, mouse, pointing device, microphone, scanner, and camera.
Pixel
The smallest colorable area in an electronic image, such as a scanned document, digital photograph, or image displayed on a display screen.
Video input
The process of capturing full‐motion images and storing them on a computer's storage medium.
Multifunction device (MFD)
A device that offers multiple functions (such as printing, scanning, and facing) in a single unit. This is an output device.
RFID reader
A device used to read RFID tags. This is an input device.
Display screen
A display device built into a notebook computer, handheld PC, or other device. This is an input device.
Monitor
A display device for a desktop PC, a stand‐alone display. It conveys text, graphics, and video information in real‐time. This is an input device.
Graphics tablet
A flat, rectangular input device that is used in conjunction with a stylus to transfer drawings, sketches, and anything written on the device to a PC in graphic form. This is an input device.
Ultra HD (4K)
A high‐definition format that uses four times as many pixels as traditional HD displays.
Table PC
A large screen computer either built into a table or designed to be used on a table that allows multi‐touch input from multiple users.
Web cam
A type of digital video camera that enables a home or small business user to add live images to instant messages, broadcast life images over the internet, and make video telephone calls. This is an input device.
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)
A type of flat‐panel display that uses charged liquid crystals to display images. One type of LCD is backlit LED LCD. This is an output device.
Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) display
A type of flat‐panel display that uses emissive organic material to display brighter and sharper images than LCDs.
OLED display or Organic Light Emitting Diode display
A type of flat‐panel display that uses emissive organic material to display brighter, sharper images than LCDs. This is an output device.
Input
Input - The CPU/computer accepts data or instructions from the user. The process of entering data into a computer; can also refer to the data itself.
Touch screen
A display device that is touched with the finger to issue commands or otherwise generate input to the connected PC. This is an output device.
Gas plasma display
A display device that uses a technology that sandwiches a layer of gas between two glass plates. This started out to be the most popular type flat‐panel display. This is an output device.
Optical scanner
A light‐sensing input device that reads printed text and graphics and translates the results into a digital form the computer can process.
Barcode
A machine‐readable code that represents data as a set of bars. An optical code that represents data with bars of varying widths or heights.
Video conference
A meeting between two or more geographically separated people who use a network or the internet to transmit audio and video data.
Headphones
A personal audio output device used by an individual so only he or she can hear the sound; headphones with built‐on microphones are typically referred to as headsets. The microphone is an input device.
Earbuds
A very small audio output device worn inside the ear. This is an output device.
Smart glasses
A wearable display device that looks like a pair of glasses but has a built‐ in display. This is an output device.
Photo printer
An output device designed for printing digital photographs.
3D printer
An output device designed to print three‐dimensional objects, such as product prototypes.
Audio device
An output device is a component of a computer that produces music, speech, or other sounds, such as beeps. Examples include speakers, headphones, and earbuds.
Output device
Any hardware component that conveys information to one or more people (display devices, printers, speakers, headphones/earbuds, data projectors).
Dot‐matrix printer
Characters and images are formed with a print head with pins that move in and out to form a shape. The pins strike an inked ribbon to transfer the ink to the paper. This is an output device.
Monochrome
Each pixel can only be one of two colors, such as black and white.
Gesture Input
Gesture recognition is the interpretation of a human motion by a computing device.
MICR or magnetic ink character recognition
MICR is used by the banking industry to help speed the processing of checks and similar documents.
Megapixels
One metric for digital camera quality is the number of pixels. Today this is measured as megapixels, millions of pixels.
Compute speakers
Output devices connected to computers that provide audio output.
Dots Per Inch (dpi)
The quantity of dots per inch affects the quality of printed output.
3D projector
Some 3D projectors are designed to project holograms. This is an output device.
Plotters or large format printers
Sophisticated printers used by engineers and architects to produce high‐ quality drawings such as blueprints, maps, and circuit diagrams using ink‐jet printer technology. This is an output device.
Biometrics
The technology of authenticating a person's identity by verifying a personal characteristic (fingerprints, hand geometry, facial features, voice, signatures, and eye patterns).
Handwriting recognition
The ability of a device to identify handwritten characters.
Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
The ability of a scanning device to recognize handwritten or typed characters and convert them to electronic form as text, not images.
Voice recognition
The computer's capability to distinguish spoken words. This can be used to control the computer and/or dictate a document.
Audio input
The process of entering any sound into the computer such as speech, music, and sound effects.
Voice input
The process of entering input by speaking into a microphone.
Resolution
number of dots per inch affects the quality of printed output. The number of pixels affect the quality of a display or camera. The larger the number, higher resolution, the more detail is visible. Higher resolutions require more storage capacity to store the document or more bandwidth to transmit the document.
Handheld scanner
A small, handheld optical scanner. This device "reads" UPC, ISBN, and other types of barcodes. This is an input device.
Voice input system
A system (software + hardware) that enables a computer to recognize the human voice. A microphone, input device, is used with the software. This is an input system.
Speech recognition system
A system (software + hardware), consisting of appropriate hardware and software, used to recognize voice input, such as dictation or spoken computer commands. A microphone, input device, is used with the software.
Radio frequency identification (RFID)
A technology used to store and transmit data located in RFID tags.
Perceptual Computing
the ability for a computer to recognize what is going on around it. More specifically, the computer can perceive the environment and the users in that environment.
Magnetic stripe card reader or magstripe reader)
A device that reads the magnetic stripe on the back of credit cards, entertainment cards, bank cards, and other similar cards. This is an output device.
Hologram
A 3D light‐based image.
Mouse
A common pointing device that the user slides along a flat surface to move a pointer around the screen and clicks its buttons to make selections. This is an input device.
RFID tag
A device containing tiny chips and radio antennas that is attached to objects that will be identified using RFID technology.
Light Emitting Diode (LED) display
An LCD display that is backlit with LEDs.
Flatbed scanner
An input device that scans flat objects one at a time.
Progressive display
Describes a display/monitor that displays one line at a time. This is an output device.
Headsets
Headphones with built‐on microphones are typically referred to as headsets. This is an output device.
Multi‐touch
Touch screens that can recognize input from more than one finger at a time, such as using two fingers to enlarge or rotate an image on the screen.
Optical Mouse
Uses devices to emit and sense light to detect a mouse's movement which controls the positon of the pointer. This is an input device

VGA (video graphics array) analog port DVI (digital visual interface), HDMI (high‐definition multimedia interface, DisplayPort, or Mini DisplayPort are digital ports
Barcode printer
An output device that prints barcoded documents. This is an output device.
All‐in‐one device
A device is a single device that provides the functionality of a printer, scanner, copy machine, and FAX machine. This is an output device.
Impact printers
A printer forms characters and graphics on a piece of paper by striking a mechanism against an inked ribbon that physically contacts the paper (good for multipart forms). Examples: dot‐matrix printer or line printers also known as a band printer. This is an output device
Non‐impact printer
A printer forms characters and graphics on a piece of paper without actually striking the paper. Examples: ink‐jet and laser printers. This is an output device.
Portable scanner
A scanner designed to capture input while on the go. This is an input device.
Near Field Communications (NFC)
A short‐range wireless technology based on RFID and used to transfer payments or other information from a smartphone to another smartphone or to a payment terminal.
Flat‐panel display
A slim type of display device that uses electronically charged chemicals or gases instead of an electron gun to display images. The most common type is liquid crystal display (LCD) or backlit LCD. Other types include gas‐plasma, OLED, e‐paper, AMOLED. This is an output device.
Touchpad
A small rectangular‐shaped input device, often found on notebook computers, that is touched with the finger or thumb to control an onscreen pointer and make selections. This is an input device.
Portable printer
A small, lightweight printer designed to be used while on the go. This is an output device.
Electronic paper (e‐ paper)
A technology that attempts to mimic the look of ordinary printed paper on a display screen.
Data projector
A type of flat‐panel display that uses layers of gas to display images; most often used on large displays. This is an output device.
Plasma display
A type of flat‐panel display that uses layers of gas to display images; most often used on large displays. This is an output device.
Display or Display device
An output device that contains a viewing screen. It conveys text, graphics, and video information in real‐time. "Display" normally refers to a device built into a system unit such as a laptop, smartphone, digital camera, or GPS. "Monitor" refers to a display that is a peripheral.
CRT monitor
An analog display device that projects images onto a display screen using a technology similar to the one used with conventional TVs. This is very old technology. This is an output device.
Bitmap image
An image made up of a grid of small dots, called pixels that are colored appropriately to represent an image. The color to be displayed at each pixel is represented by some combination of 0s and 1s, and the number of bits required to store the color for each pixel ranges from 1 to 24 bits.
QR (Quick Response) code
An image that can be scanned. It represents data with a matrix of small squares. Most are used by consumers to navigate to a Web site.
Keyboard
An input device containing numerous keys, arranged in a configuration similar to that of a typewriter, that can be used to input letters, numbers, and other symbols.
Stylus
An input device that is used to write electronically on the display screen; also called a digital pen, electronic pen, or pen.
Electronic pen
An input device that is used to write electronically on the display screen; also called a stylus or digital pen.
Pointing device
An input device that moves an on‐screen pointer, such as an arrow, to allow the user to select objects on the screen. A mouse, trackball, and touchpad are all examples of pointing devices.
Barcode reader
An input device that reads barcodes. This is an input device.
Scanner
An input device that reads printed text and graphics and transfers them to a computer in a digital form similar to a picture. This is an input device.
Joystick
An input device that resembles a car's gear shift and is often used for gaming.
Digital camera
An input device that takes pictures and records them as digital data (instead of film or videotaped) images. Flash memory is the typical storage medium. One factor affecting quality is the resolution measured in megapixels.
Trackball
An input device, similar to an upside‐down mouse, that can be used to control an onscreen pointer and make selections. This is an input device.
Kiosk
An interactive or consumer kiosk is a computer terminal featuring specialized hardware and software that provides access to information and applications for communication, commerce, entertainment, or education for example, kiosks may enable users to order from a shop's catalogue, check out a library book, look up information about products, issue a hotel key card, or perform an online transaction such as pay a bill. A kiosk normally includes input and output devices as well as a computer.
Pages Per Minutes (ppm)
How many pages can be printed in a minute is a measurement of printer speed.
Pointer
In a graphical user interface (GUI), a pointer is a small symbol on the screen whose location and shape change as a user moved a pointing device.
Optical Mark Reader (OMR)
Input data from an Optical Mark Form to score or tally exams, questionnaires, ballots, etc. An example is a scantron.
Function keys
Keys on some keyboards used to issue commands. In personal computing, gestures are most often used for input commands
Backlighting
LCD panels used with computer monitors typically include a light, usually at the rear of the display devices, a technique referred to as backlighting.
Output
The CPU/computer distributes the results or sends the results out to the user. The process of presenting the results of processing; can also refer to the results themselves. Examples of output devices: monitor, printer, speakers, projector.
Game controller
The input device that directs movements and actions of on‐screen objects in video games and computer games. This is an input device.
Bit depth
The number of bits used to store color information about each pixel. The greater the bit depth, the more colors that can be used to display images.
Biometric reader
This is a generic device. A device used to input biometric data, such as an individual's fingerprint, voice, iris, hand geometry, facial geometry, etc. Each biometric characteristic has its own type of scanner e.g. fingerprint scanner, iris scanner, facial scanner, etc.
Code 39 Also called Code 3 of 9
a common barcode type used for various labels such as name badges, inventory and industrial applications. The symbology of the Code 39 character set consists of barcode symbols representing numbers 0‐9, upper‐case letters A‐Z, the space character and the following symbols: ‐ . $ / + %.
Speaker
an audio output device that generates sound such as voice, music, and sound effects. This is an output device.
