top-level domain (TLD)

Identifies the type of organization associated with the domain.

encryption

Process of converting readable data into unreadable characters to prevent unauthorized access.

cookies

Small text files that are sent to your computer from certain websites. They track your behavior and transactions.

Uniform Resource Locator (URL)

The address used for locating a document on the Web.

Hypertext Transfer Protocol secure

The protocol for transferring secure information over the Internet

Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)

The set of rules that controls the transfer of web pages. It is a protocol that allows web browsers to talk to web servers.

Website

a collection of related web pages; can contain images, video, or other digital formats

cache

a copy of each web page you view kept in your browser

server address

a part of an internet address after the forward slashes; www.cengage.com

citation

a quotation from or reference to a book, paper, or author, especially in a scholarly work.

media sharing site

a website that enables members to manage and share media such as photos, videos, and music

online social network

a website that encourages members in its online community to share their interests, ideas, stories, photos, music, and videos with other registered users

e-commerce

electronic business or exchange conducted over the internet

Webpage

electronic document on the web that can contain text, graphics, animation, audio, and video

Hyperlinks

highlighted words or pictures on the internet that, when clicked, will connect the user to a particular file, even to a specific relevant part of a document

index.html

Blogs

online journals where people and companies post their thoughts and other content, usually related to narrowly defined topics

application

software you use to perform a task

plagiarism

taking credit for someone else's writing or ideas

copyright

the exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorize others to do the same.

domain name

the part of a network address that identifies it as belonging to a particular domain.

ethics

the principles of right and wrong that guide an individual in making decisions

query

to ask, inquire

portal

website that combines pages from many sources and provides access to those pages

keywords

words that describe the information the user is trying to locate
