DDE
state the doctrine of double effect and explain it
(it is sometimes permissible to bring about by oblique intention what one may not directly intend, in other words) it is sometimes permissible to bring about a bad consequence if its merely foreseen but not if its intended
examples od DDE (man in cave)
A man is stuck in the mouth of a cave facing out, and several others are trapped inside, The cave is about to be flooded with rising waters, We are considering blowing him up into pieces so that the rest can escape
intended consequences
Any effect that is conceived as the ultimate end or as a necessary means to that end
merely foreseen consequences
Any effect that is not intended, but is merely foreseen (side effect)
examples of DDE (runaway trolley)
Diverting the runaway trolley from 5 to 1 Framing an innocent and hanging him so as to avoid a riot that would result in more deaths
examples of DDE (drug)
Giving a lifesaving drug to 5 instead of 1 Using the 1's body to manufacture a drug for the 5
objections to DDE
If bad consequences can be foreseen why does it matter if its also intended In both cases I know what will happen
direct intentions
When the relevant consequence is intended
oblique intentions
When the relevant consequence is merely foreseen
