synchronous reference sensor (SRS)

Detroit Diesel's term for a camshaft position sensor

timing reference sensor (TRS)

Detroit Diesel's term for a crankshaft position sensor

GHG14 aftertreatment device (ATD)

Detroit Diesel's term for aftertreatment system components that use electrically controlled DEF pumps and fluid dosing of the SCT rather than air pressure

virtual technician

a brand name for telematics communications package used to exchange information between a vehicle chassis and a central dispatch monitoring the operation of a vehicle.

axial power turbine (APT)

a device located after the turbocharger that uses a turbine wheel to capture exhaust energy and convert it to usable engine power

ethylene glycol

a fluid used by an antifreeze base and to lubricate O-rings and other types of elastomer seals that are not oil compatible.

nozzle return circuit

a fuel pathway from the ACR injectors leading to the low-pressure fuel module, which drains fuel from the NCV; also known as a needle return circuit

back leakage

a general term used to describe any fuel circuit or component that supplies or transports fuel from the engine to the fuel tank.

amplified common rail (ACR)

a high-pressure injection system that multiplies the fuel rail pressure inside the injector

rootes blower

a high-volume positive displacement air pump used to pressurize intake air for Detroit Diesel two-stroke cycle diesels

poppet control valve

a mushroom shaped valve used by unit injectors that operates under the influence of a magnetic field to open and close and injector spill port

balance shaft

a rotating shaft having an eccentric weight that is used to offset torsional vibration produced by an engine

heavy-duty on-board (HD-OBD) executive

a software program inside the MCM used to run monitors and make decisions about concerning the on-board diagnostic system.

height gauge

a tool used by technicians that is used to adjust the plunger travel of a unit injector for Detroit Diesel N2 injectors.

E3 EUI

a type of electronically controlled unit injector containing a nozzle control valve and spill control valve. Delphi manufactures E3 injectors for several OEM engine producers

asymmetrical turbocharger (AT)

a type of turbocharge that has one turbine volute made smaller than the other in order to increase exhaust backpressure for the EGR system

intake throttle valve

a valve used to regulate the quantity of fresh air entering the cylinders of an engine

calibration codes

alpha and/or numerical information assigned to a specific injector used by the ECM to correct for manufacturing tolerances of an injector; also called injector codes or fuel trim codes

common power train controller (CPC)

an ECM used to store and process vehicle-and application specific information

aftertreatment control module (ACM)

an electronic control module used to process sensor data and control the outputs for the DPF and SCR system

right-hand rotation engine

an engine that turns clockwise when viewed from the flywheel

left-hand rotation engine

an engine that turns counterclockwise when viewed from the flywheel

CR14 injector

another term for the amplified common rail injector

supercharger

any mechanical device used to pressurize the intake air above atmospheric pressure. Superchargers include rootes blowers and turbochargers

hydraulically balanced nozzle valve

fast-acting nozzle valve that opens and closes by slight changes in fuel pressure applied to the top and bottom of a nozzle valve.

spill control valve (SCV)

one of two control valves used in E3 and ACR injectors, which are used to vary spray in pressure of injectors. The timing of the SCV operation lowers or increases injection pressures

motor control module (MCM)

the electronic control module used by Detroit Diesel to control engine operation. The MCM receives sensor input, processes information using operating algorithms, and produces output signals

EPA07 emission standards

the emissions standard set by the EPA for medium and heavy duty diesel emissions in 2007. These standard are similar to Euro 5.

EPA10 emission standards

the emissions standard set by the EPA for medium and heavy duty diesel emissions in 2010. These standard are similar to Euro 6.

quantity control valve

the pulse-width modulated inlet metering valve used on the high-pressure pump of Detroit Diesel's ACR system. Its operation controls the pressure supplied to the high pressure fuel rail.

torsional vibration

the speeding up and slowing down of a crankshaft due to deceleration during compression strokes and acceleration during power strokes

injector response time (IRT)

the time it takes for each injector to build a magnetic field strong enough to operate the valve.

nozzle control valve (NCV)

the valve that controls the balancing of hydraulic pressure on either side of a hydraulically balanced nozzle valve; it opens and closes the nozzle valve.
