Zener diode

a type of diode that behaves like a typical silicon diode up to a precise threshold called a Zener point. After it reaches the Zener point voltage, the diode conducts in both directions

rheostat

a variable resistor constructed of a fixed input terminal and a variable output terminal, which vary current flow by passing current through a long resistive tightly coiled wire

Potentiometer

a variable resistor with three connections-one at each end of the resistive path, and a third sliding contact that moves along the resistive pathway

capacitor

a circuit-control device made up of two plates separated by the insulated material

light-emitting diode (LED)

a diode that produces light in different colors depending on the doping material used in its manufacture

photodiode

a diode that will forward bias only when light strikes it

organic light-emitting diode (OLED)

a light-emitting diode that uses carbon-based semiconductor material

N material

a material with a movable negative charge

P material

a material with a movable positive charge

photoresistor

a semiconductor-type of resistor in which resistance decreases as light intensity increases

reverse bias

a situation in which a diode blocks current flow

forward bias

a situation in which a diode conducts current

negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor

a thermistor in which resistance decreases as the temperature increases

positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor

a thermistor in which resistance increases as the temperature increases

bipolar transistor

a transistor that combines either two P or N materials with a single P or N-type material forming PNP or NPN transistors

NPN transistor

a type of bipolar transistor with two blocks of N material and one block of P material

PNP transistor

a type of bipolar transistor with two blocks of P material and one block of N material

Zener point

the voltage at which a diode will conduct current in both directions instead of just one
