You are an employee of a large medical group. One of the physician partners prescribes a severely restricted vegetarian diet for his patients with cancer. Would you be violating the code of ethics if you followed the physician's orders? If yes, specify the part of the code of ethics that you would be violating. Although the physician is not obligated to follow the dietetics code of ethics, she should follow a medical code of ethics. Based the codes we have discussed in class, do you think she is violating the code of ethics by telling her patients to follow this diet? Why or why not? How would you handle this situation?
Yes you would be violating the code of ethics if you followed the physician's order to counsel patients on a diet that you don't believe is beneficial. You would be breaking the responsibilities to the public part of the code of ethics by "not providing accurate and truthful information in communicating with the public." Yes I do believe that this is violating the code of ethics because by telling her patients to follow this diet she would be going against the information that she research and deceiving her patients by giving them false information. I would handle this situation by telling the physician that I could not counsel the patients on this diet because I could not find information that it would be beneficial to them.
