Hi Fiber diet

A diet high in fiber is used to correct constipation, prevent diverticulitis and lower the risk of colon cancer. The recommended intake is 30-40 grams of fibers per day. Clients should increase their intake of fruits, vegetables, bran cereals and whole grains.

low cholestrol diet

A low cholesterol diet is used for cardiovascular disease and those with high serum cholesterol levels. The normal amount of cholesterol intake is 250-300 mg/day. Diet restrictions include eggs, beef, liver, lobster and ice cream.

low protein diet

A low protein diet is recommended for clients that have renal disease such as pyelonephritis, uremia and kidney failure. Clients must limit their protein to less than 40 g/day instead of the normal 40-60 g/day.

Low purine diet

A low purine diet prevents uric acid stones and is used for clients with gout. This diet restricts glandular meats, fowl, anchovies, beer and wine.

low residual/ fiber diet

A low residual diet is used for conditions such as diarrhea and acute diverticulitis. Clients are asked to reduce their intake of canned fruit, refined carbohydrates and fruits/vegetables. Foods that are high in refined carbohydrates are usually low in fiber.

puree diet

A puree diet is used with dysphagia or with clients who have difficulty chewing. It can also be used for tube feedings and for small babies. All food must be blended to smooth consistency.

liquid diet

Clear liquid: coffee without cream, tea, popsicles, fruit juices, including apple, cranberry, grape and carbonated beverages. Full liquid: includes all clear liquids plus milk, cream, ice cream, pudding, yogurt, vegetable juice and creamy peanut butter.

mechanical soft

Clients who have difficulty chewing, poorly fitted dentures or edentulous clients (no teeth) are typically placed on a mechanical soft diet.

high protein

Clients with conditions such as burns, anemia, malabsorption syndromes and ulcerative colitis are put on a high protein diet. Additional protein supplements like Sustagen® are often used in this diet. A high protein diet should include more than 60 g of protein per day, instead of the normal protein intake of 40-60 g/day (1 g/1 kg/day).

dash diet

The DASH diet is used to help lower blood pressure but may also offer protection against osteoporosis, cancer, stroke, diabetes and heart disease. The standard DASH diet limits sodium to 2300 mg/day and a lower DASH diet restricts sodium to 1500 mg/day. The DASH diet is also low in saturated fat, cholesterol and total fat.

acid ash diet

The ash diet prevents kidney stone formation. The restrictions include carbonated beverages, dried fruits, banana, figs, chocolate, nuts, olives and pickles.

diabetic diet

The diabetic diet focuses on preventing wide daily fluctuations in blood glucose levels, decreasing serum lipid levels and accurate carbohydrate counting. The diet is individualized according to the client's age, build, weight and activity level.

low/no gluten diet

This diet is used for people with sensitivity to glutens (proteins) in wheat, oats, rye and barley. Clients may eat rice, corn and millet products.

Low calcium diet

a client with hypercalcemia would be limited to 400 mg per day instead of the normal 800 mg. This diet restricts consumption of dried fruits and vegetables, as well as shellfish, cheese and nuts.
