Steps to verify a DEA number: Add the 1st, 3rd, and 5th digits of the DEA # Add 2nd, 4th, 6th digits (multiply the sum by 2) Add the results of the previous two steps Check that the last digit of this sum is the same as the last digit of the DEA number. If so, the number is valid Example: A prescriber whose last name is Smith has a DEA number AS4967432. The first letter of the DEA number identifies their registrant type. The second letter is the first letter of their last name The sum of the 1st, 3rd, 5th digits: 4+6+4=14 The sum of the 2nd, 4th, 6th digits: 9+7+3=19 Then doubling it is: 19x2=38 The sum of the previous two sets are: 14+38=52
