Metalloids

A metalloid element has properties of both metal elements and nonmetal elements. They are they last category of elements.

Pure Substance

A pure substance is a substance in which there is only one type of particle. Elements are pure substances. A pure substance is made of only one kind of particle or atom.

Element

An element is a pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means. Elements can no be broken down. When combined with other elements, they form compounds.

Atoms

Atoms are particles that cannot be seen without a microscope. The atoms in a pure substance are alike wherever they are found.

Nonmetal

Nonmetals are the second category of elements. Nonmetal elements conduct heat and electricity poorly. They are dull in appearance.

Metal

Metal is an element that is shiny and that conducts heat and electricity well. Not all metals are alike but most have properties in common.

Give 2 characteristic properties of elements and examples of each. Metalloids

Metalloids are semiconductors that can be shiny or dull. Some metalloids are malleable and can be flattened into sheets. Silicon, boron and antimony are all metalloids.

Give 2 characteristic properties of elements and examples of each. Metals

Metals are good heat and electricity conductors. Metals are shiny. Some examples of metals include lead, copper and tin. Metal is malleable.

Give 2 characteristic properties of elements and examples of each. Nonmetals

Nonmetals are elements that are not shiny, poor conductors and brittle. Sulfur, iodine and neon are examples of nonmetals.

What things identify physical properties of elements?

The appearance of an element is a physical property. An element that is malleable, shiny, dense or able to be melted hold those physical properties. Elements can be identified by their physical properties.

What things identify chemical properties of elements?

Whether an element is flammable or reacts with oxygen or acid is a chemical property of an element. An element has unique chemical properties by which it can be distinguished.

Nonmetals are...

dull, poor conductors, brittle, not malleable

Metalloids are...

semi- conductors, shiny OR dull, somewhat malleable, somewhat ductile, some conduct heat and electricity

Metals are...

shiny, good conductors, malleable, ductile
