crude mortality rate (definition)

-AKA annual death rate, mortality rate -sometimes use the population at the midyear point (June 30th) because people move in and out of a specific area -anyone in the denominator group must have the potential to enter the group represented by the numerator

cause specific mortality rate (definition)

-any restrictions must be applied to both the denominator and the numerator -can have more than one specific restriction -example; how many children age 5-10 years died of pneumonia in 2013 -time must be specified in any mortality rate (ex; annual in 2014)

problems with mortality data

-comparing mortality in different populations -compare TWO or more populations -one population in different time periods -age distribution ----single most important predictor of mortality ----direct age adjustment ----indirect age adjustment

survival rate

-measure of prognosis (the likely outcome of a disease) -measures probability of surveying a specified period of time -expressed as a percent

mortality

-measures of disease severity -determine whether the treatment for a disease has become more effective over time -serve as a substitute for incidence rate when disease is deadly (Ebola) -good reflection of incidence (risk of disease)

case fatality rate (definition)

-proportion of persons with a particular condition (case) who die from that condition -must have the illness -must die from the illness (not any other causes. ex; car crash)

proportionate mortality (formula)

NUMERATOR: deaths from a particular cause DENOMINATOR: deaths from all causes *multiplied by 100

case fatality rate (formula)

NUMERATOR: number of cause-specific deaths among the incident cases DENOMINATOR: number of cases reported *multiplied by 100

crude mortality rate (formula)

NUMERATOR: number of deaths in the place during a specific time DENOMINATOR: total population at that same location at that point in time *multiplied by 10^nth

cause specific mortality rate (formula)

NUMERATOR: number of deaths contributed to a specific cause DENOMINATOR: total number of people in the population *multiplied by 10^nth

proportionate mortality (definition)

describes the proportion of deaths in a specified population over a period of time attributable to different causes -expressed as a percentage (100)
