Peer pressure-the feeling of being popular and being accepted makes one want to take drugs or drink schools incorporate assemblies about drugs and the negatives of it show that you actually aren't cool or accepted if you take drugs and make it a personal decision rather than push the decision to take the drugs onto another person

drug use: the intentional use of drugs appropriately and legally (ibuprofen for a headache) drug misuse: unintentional or inappropriate use of drugs (stopping using drugs against doctors orders, mixing drugs, consuming more than prescribed, saving and using old medication, not following directions when taking drugs) drug abuse: the intentional and inappropriate use of a drug and having consequences on your body (using too much in short period of time-getting too drunk, illegal drugs, dangerous)

should drugs be decriminalized or legalized? give examples of drugs that could be decriminalized and some that are now illegal that should be legal . why did you choose the ones you chose?

drugs like heroin or ecstasy should not be legalized due to their very addictive and dangerous qualities those types of drugs can kill someone easily a drug like marijuana which is legal in some states and not in others should be legalized marijuana is a higher schedule drug meaning that one is very unlikely to overdose and get addicted marijuana helps with pain and can be prescribed

failure to meet work tolerance withdrawal symptoms low reasoning skills negative depressed low self-esteem

discuss arguments for and against decriminalizing and/or legalizing drugs

for- less need for big prisons, criminal costs would decline, more people would be treated instead of punished against- more need for treatment, criminal activity escalates, addicts would rise

do you think drug testing should be instituted at all organization levels (workplace, school, etc) what would it accomplish?

i think it should be instituted at all organization levels to keep competition fair and to make sure the people working and in these organizations are staying away from drugs to have a job, spot on a team, etc

discuss the impact of drugs on the family

if a parent is on drugs, the child experiences instability and become secondary to the drug dependence needs of parents finances can go towards drugs instead of supporting children and the rest of the family...likely to be abused mentally and physically parents on drugs lack parenting skills, support, and stability when a child has an addiction, it becomes the parents main focus and parents can get torn between wanting to deal with their child who has an addiction or maintaining a stable environment for the other children and rest of the family

discuss how the society's perceptions of drugs influences the effects of drugs

illegal drugs are condemned much more than legal drugs ex: tobacco in the form of cigarettes are perceived more negatively there is an association between illegal drug use and violent crime prenatal exposure to drugs and alcohol have devastating effects to the baby drugs are widely available especially in larger cities making the issue not end

should it be permissible for people to take drugs to increase performance and in what instances

it should not be permissible to take drugs to increase performance because it is unfair and not sportsmanlike (if athletic) it is better for your body to produce these hormones naturally and you should become better at your sport or have bigger muscles due to hard work bad side effects go along with these drugs as well

how is DAWN helpful? what other things might be done to complement DAWN and how would they help

its helpful because it shows that drug use is very common and how drug use is a serious issue and a big epidemic NHCS was implemented and was an expansion on the type of info that was collected

laws passed after 1914 seem to regulate the safety of drugs by making the producers provide ingredients and side effects FDA given increasing power to test, regulate and classify drugs

do you think racism is a factor of drug legislation? why or why not?

many early drug laws were attempts at creating laws to control minority populations 1875 San Francisco ordinance prohibited opium dens from the Chinese who would come here for drugs

how have drugs impacted American families, culture, and politics? what examples can you cite that support your response

normally have negative impact on families-- divorce, domestic violence, financial issues, etc education is very important in our culture and if teens are getting addicted to drugs that could cause high dropouts as well as eventually not being able to get a job and therefore need to be supported by government politics always seem to cover drug related issues due to how serious an epidemic is

prisons gave many people incarcerated for drug related offenses... drugs can relate to violent crimes, news shows have stories about drugs and drug related offenses, being on drugs while pregnant you have to spend a lot of money on drug reinforcement, prevention, and treatment... could be hard for some families, federal government spends a lot of money on requested expenditures

recommended the decriminalization of marijuana mandatory sentences for first offense possession of illegal drug was abolished possibility of parole was re-implemented the emphasis of the law was to punish drug dealer instead of the user
