Exam Sitting Positions
Proctologic
"Jack knife position" / used for rectal exams
Fowler's
Upper back elevated and legs flat / Same as supine but for people with lower back pain and/or shortness of breath
Knee Elbow
Weight is rested on the forearms and knees / used for anal and rectal exams
Sitting position
general exam
Supine position
laying flat on back / abdominal region and breast exam
Dorsal recumbant
laying flat on back with knees up / head, neck, abdomen, heart, and vag/rec. if they cant use stirrups
Lithotomy
1. vaginal exam in the stirrups 2. flat on back with legs down for digital vaginal exam and to palpate the pelvic region
Prone
Laying flat on stomach for rectal exam, examinations of the back and feet or musculoskeletal system
Sim's
Laying on the your side with your knees bent together / used for anal or rectal exams and certain pelvic exams. Difficult to do for people with lower back pain or hip pain
