How does the executive branch serve as a "check" on the other 2 branches?
A president has to sign a bill to become a law, this checks on the legislative branch. For the judicial branch, he president has to appoint the Supreme Court justices, so this way, the president checks on the judicial branch.

How is the executive branch limited on its powers?
The president has the power to negotiate and sign treaties, but is limited by the fact it then must be ratified by 2/3 of congress. Also, the president can veto bills, but congress can override the veto by 2/3 vote, which limits the president's power.
