credit

- Courses are labeled with a "Credit." Credit often shows the amount of time you spend in the class. • .5 credit = 1 semester • 1 credit = 1 period for 1 year • 2 credits = 2 period block for 1 year

Core Academic Courses

- Courses required to graduate: Math, Science, English, Social Studies

Fine Arts: Visual & Performing Arts

- Everyone MUST take at least 1 credit of Fine Arts to graduate. This can be fulfilled by taking any ART elective you choose (Dance, Choir, Band, Art, Theatre, etc)

transcript

An official piece of paper that shows EVERY grade from high school, including this course! If you apply to any post-secondary school, you are required to submit your transcripts.

credit recovery

An opportunity to retake a course that you have failed so that you can stay on track for graduation.

elective courses

Courses you take based on your interests. You are required to take 7 credits of electives, but you choose which electives you want to take (Advanced Theatre courses, CTE, Advanced Art courses, additional Science, Math, English or Social Studies courses)

Career and Technical Education

Elective courses based on career interests (Marketing, Agriculture, Construction, A/V Technology, etc)

Superintendent Scholar

Students with at least a 95% average in class, no ISS or AEP, can be recognize as a SS.

The CCISD online program that allows you to take courses to get ahead.

Advanced Placement

These courses are upper-level and will prepare you for college. These courses will also give you college credit if you successfully pass them.

Prerequisite

This is a course that MUST be completed prior to taking another course. For example: you must take Algebra I before you can take Algebra II; therefore, Algebra I is a prerequisite to Algebra II.

dual credit

This is a course that you take at College of the Mainlands and receive both HS and College credit once completed.

Grade Point Average

This is a numerical version of your grades. Each course's grade is worth a certain number of points (1-5) which are averaged together. Your GPA (Ex. 3.8 or 4.2) determines your Class Rank.

endorsement

This is the CCISD term for declaring a major. Students earn an endorsement by taking the required classes. There are 5 endorsements available: STEM, Public Services, Arts & Humanities, Multidisciplinary, and Business & Industry

World Language & Culture

This is your "foreign language" requirement. Every student MUST have a minimum of 2 credits/years of a foreign language (French, German, Spanish, Latin, Am Sign Language, Chinese)

class rank

VERY IMPORTANT for scholarships and college applications! This is where you fall amongst your classmates based on your GPA. Example: Your class rank is 10 out of 200 students.

independent study

When you are accepted into an Independent Study course, you are paired with a professional in the career field of your choice to work with on a daily basis. You get first hand knowledge about the career and gain insight into that career field. There are IS courses already set up; however, if you have contacts in the community, you can request an IS in ANYTHING!

career and technical education

pre-advanced placement

this level course falls between regualr courses and ap courses. It's more challenging than regular Math, but not as tough as AP Math. It can prepare you for the rigor of an AP course.
