While the British and Egyptians were conquering the Sudan a French army reached Sudan from West Africa. This caused the British and French to face each other in Fashoda.

For 16 years the Sudanese nationalists resisted attempts to occupy their land. In 1898 a combined force of British and Egyptians conquered the Sudan.
