metaphor

hyperbole

purposeful exaggeration for effect. ex I will love you forever. My mom is going to kill me. I'm fine.

idiom

A common, often used expression that doesn't make sense if you take it literally.ex: do not be a stick in the mud. I have an ace up my sleeve. You're the apple of my eye.

simile

A comparison using like or as. ex: she is as sweet as candy. I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket. Fly like a G6.

Proverb

A figurative saying in which a bit of wisdom is give ex. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Honesty is the best policy

oxymoron

A figure of speech that combines opposite or contradictory terms in a brief phrase.ex: jumbo shrimp.awfully good.inside out

understatement

A statement that says less than what is meant. ex: I will be there in a second. It is not that bad. This won't hurt a bit.

onomatopoeia

A word that imitates the sound it represents.ex: pow, splat, oink,ACHOO

personifiacation

Gives human qualities to something that is nonhuman. ex: the sun light danced. the tree was happy. Water on the lake shivers.

pun

a form of wordplay.ex: without geometry life is pointless. being struck by lightning is a shocking experience. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
