A struggle between a character and something that is caused by nature, such as the weather

A word that means the same as another word

tone

Attitude a writer takes toward the audience, a subject, or a character, example: And the trees all died. They were orange trees and beautiful once. I can't believe they all died. The tone of this excerpt could be unhappy, depressing, or melancholy.

context clues

Clues in surrounding text that help the reader determine the meaning of an unknown word

falling action

Events after the climax, leading to the resolution

Most exciting moment of the story; turning point, the largest decision the character has to make

Alliteration

Repetition of initial consonant sounds

Exposition

This is where the background information is presented, main characters are introduced, and the conflict is established.

fast-pace

To create a sense that time is going quickly and to make hearts race, an author might use this by repeating words and using short sentences or phrases separated by commas

slow-pace

To create the sense that time is going slowly and to build suspense, an author uses this by writing long sentences, using punctuation that makes the reader pause or stop, repeating sentence structure, and using formal diction

Internal Conflict (Man vs. Self)

When a character is challenging his/her own beliefs or overcoming his/her emotions
