Force and motion
How do forces affect motion?
A force can start an object moving, change the direction or speed of a moving object or stop the object
Push
A force that moves an object away
Pull
A force that moves an object nearer
Gravity
A force that pulls objects toward each other
Friction
A force that slows down or stops motion between two surface that are touching
Force
A push or a pull
Position
An object's location or position
What is friction?
Friction slows or stops motion. It exits between any two surfaces that touch. The rougher the surface, the more friction there will be. Without friction, we would slip and slide on every surface
What is gravity?
Gravity is a force that pulls objects toward Each other. For example, Earth's gravity pulls things toward the ground. Objects with greater mass have greater gravity.
Speed
Measure of the distance an object moves in a certain period of time
How are gravity and friction alike?
-Both forces -both can change the motion of an object (direction, speed) -Both can stop motion
How are gravity and friction different?
-Gravity can act on objects at a distance, friction acts on objects that are touching -Friction can be a push or a pull, gravity is a pull
Motion
The change in an object's position
What is speed?
The measure of the distance an object moves over a period of time. It is measured using units of distance and time. For example, miles per hour or meters in a second
How do things move?
To move object we apply force change the objects position this is called motion.
