Four regions of the brain
Brain stem
Most basic, automatic survival behaviors. Midbrain - Visual & auditory reflexes, motor control. Pons - Mostly nerve tracts between brain and spinal cord. Medulla oblongata - Cardiovascular, respiratory regulation
Cerebrum
Executive functions of brain (consciousness). Divided into right and left hemispheres. Motor areas, sensory areas, association areas
Cerebellum
Integrates cerebral motor instructions with proprioceptive information from body to coordinate voluntary movement
Diencephalon
Thalamus - relay station for cerebral cortex Hypothalamus - Emotions, autonomic control, homeostasis, sleep, endocrine system regulation Epithalamus - melatonin-producing pineal gland
