Why did the Greeks develop city-states?

300 years after Mycenaean end, Greeks started to join together in small groups of protection and stability. Over time, they became independent city-states. Started the Classical Age. Became foundation of Greek civilizations. Gave them protection and identity. Didn't have to fear raiders. Free to think of becoming rich of trades, curious about neighboring lands, and deal with population.

Both influenced the entire Aegean region and helped shape later cultures in Greece. They both lived in Crete in some moment in their lifes. they both were great traders.

Few areas for farmland. Flat areas along the coast and river valleys. Communities were isolated because of the mountains.

Why do you think the Greeks built their cities around a high acropolis?

I think that they did that so that it would be easier to see everything and maybe their enemies if they were ever attacked.it could also become a desatvantage to other people but it ends up with being an advantage to the Greeks. The women, children and elderly were also safer inside the fortress while the others fought.

To what region did Minoan and Mycenaean traders travel?

Sailed to Asia Minor, Egypt, Turkey, islands of the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. Minoans shipped objects all around the eastern Mediterranean. Mycenaeans built fortresses all around mainland Greece, and became the main traders of Eastern Med. Had colonies in North Greece and Italy. They shipped goods to markets around the Med. and Black Seas. Greeks sailed to Egypt and islands around the Black Sea.

The first major civilization to develop in Crete were the Minoans. The spent much time in the sea because they lived in the sea. Great shipbuilders; their ships carried goods such as wood, olive oil, pottery and they used this to trade. A volcano may have caused their extincion.

The landforms that are found in Greece are rocky, mountainous lands surrounded by water. It's a peninsula that is surrounded on three sides by water. Has rugged coastlines and the peninsula is made from smaller peninsulas. Has a few small valleys and coastal plains where they were able to farm and make villages

The sea made it easier to travel instead of going through the mountains. They fished for food and they also used it as a way to trade to other communities. They became skilled shipbuilders and sailors. They also found sources of food and other things they needed when they traveled. They also exchanged ideas with other countries.

How might the difficulty of mountain travel have been a benefit to the Greeks?

The traded and became good at trading and good shipbuilders.
