Northwest

The two hemispheres where Georgia is located.

Latitude

These lines run east to west horizontally across the globe and measure distances north and south of the Equator.

Valley and Ridge

Region of Georgia with fertile farmland between ridges, also known as the "Carpet Capital of the World".

Southeast

Region of the United States that Georgia is located.

Coastal Plain

Southernmost region of the state. This is the agricultural heartland of the state. Characterized by hot summers and cool winters.

North America

The continent that Georgia is located on.

Longitude

The lines run north and south vertically on the globe and measure distances east and west of the Prime Meridian.

Okefenokee Swamp

the largest swamp in North America; was the home to many Native Americans and a location for Spanish missions. Its name means "land of the trembling earth".

Blue Ridge

•Located in the NE corner (mountainous) •Brasstown Bald/Springer Mountain/tourism •Most Rainfall

Chatahoochee River

Begins in the Blue Ridge region and ends in the Gulf of Mexico. Forms a border between Georgia and Alabama. Used primarily as a water source for the millions of Georgians who live in the Piedmont region.

Piedmont

Characterized by gently rolling hills, located in the central part of the state. Means "foot of the hills" and is home to significant agricultural production.

Savannah River

Forms a border between Georgia and South Carolina. One of Georgia's longest waterways has been a source of water, food, and transportation for thousands of years.

Barrier Islands

Found off of the coast of Georgia. Protects mainland Georgia from wind and water erosion. Native Americans lived on them and the Spanish set up missions on them in the 1500's.

Appalachian Plateau

Georgia's smallest region located in the northwestern corner of the state. Known as the TAG corner.

Atlantic

Ocean that borders Georgia's east coast.

Appalacian Mountains

This physical feature is located in North Georgia. It is home to Georgia's highest peak: Brasstown Bald. Many of Georgia's major rivers and tributaries start here.

The Fall Line

This separates the Piedmont from the Coastal Plain. Many of Georgia's most important cities are located on this.
