Gregor Mendel and Genetics:)
Hybrids
Offspring that come from cross-pollination
Genetics
The science of heredity
Pea plants are naturally self-pollinating. How did Mendel control pollination in his pea plants?
Mendel controlled the pollination of his pea plants by removing the anthers in some plants and pollinating by hand.
What theory did Gregor Mendel prove to be incorrect? Why did he begin to question this theory?
Mendel discredited the Blending Theory of Inheritance. He began to question this theory when he noticed plants in his garden were not a blend of the parents. For example, he noticed that the offspring of a short and tall plant was not medium in size, which would've been a blend. Rather, they were either tall or short, but never medium.
Why is Mendel referred to as "the father of genetics"?
Mendel is known as the father of genetics because his discoveries formed the base of genetics. Scientists wouldn't know how offspring inherit traits from their parents if it wasn't for Gregor Mendel.
Pollination
The fertilization step in the sexual reproduction of plants; occurs when pollen is transferred from the anther to the stigma of the same or another flower.
Cross-Pollination
When pollen from one plant fertilizes another plant o the same species
Self-Pollination
When pollen from one plant transfers to the stigmas of flowers on the same plant
What two subjects did Mendel academically excel in?
Mendel academically excelled in physics and math.
Gamete
A cell that fuses with another cell during fertilization in organisms that sexually reproduce
Stigma
A female part of the flower that receives and passes pollen grains to the ovary where female gametes are; part of the pistil
Pollen
Consists of tiny grains that are the male gametes; produced in the anther
Why did Gregor Mendel choose to do experiments on pea plants?
Gregor Mendel chose to conduct his experiments on pea plants because they grow quickly and are easy to raise.
In what year was Gregor Mendel born?
Gregor Mendel was born in 1822.
What does the Blending Theory of Inheritance state?
The Blending Theory of Inheritance states that offspring have a blend or mix of their parents' traits or characteristics.
Anther
Part of the stamen which produces pollen
