How were the Knights of Labor and American Federation of Labor similar and different?

Knights of Labor were members were skilled and unskilled workers, rallied for shorter work days, equal pay for men and women, and to end child labor. Its founding marked the beginning of union activism in the era. AFL were members were skilled workers only, goals were strikes for shorter work days/higher wages/improved working conditions (set practical goals to achieve through collective bargaining) Both fought for worker's rights. The Knights represented everyone, while the AFL represented skilled workers. The Knights ideas and actions were more radical than the AFL.

What was the status of unions at the end of the 19th Century?

They continued to gain members. Unions had successfully demonstrated their ability to organize workers. They had won victories for higher wages and shorter workdays.

Why did workers need labor unions? What were their goals?

Workers need a labor unison because they needed to speak up as a group rather than as individuals. Their goals were to have better hours, pay and working conditions.
