It was a war of attrition and the USA just sent their fresh troops over. This caused Germany to be massively overwhelmed. Germany forfeited the war and the Treaty of Versailles took place and it made Germany give up all its colonies, take claim for the war, pay for all war reparations, restrict the power of the military for Germany and give some of its land in between Russia and itself to Poland

Citizens are proud of their country and are willing to fight for it. Alsace-Lorraine- Region Germany one from France in the Franco-Prussian war of 1871- France wanted it back. Serbia wanted independence from Austria-Hungary Nations built up their armies which increased militarism. Each nation began to view themselves as superior and more dominant to the others which only affected the war more.

Competition over colonies caused tension. European powers felt threatened by one another. There were spheres of influence and boundary disputes. Austria-Hungary wanted to maintain control over Bosnia (imperialism) which led to the assassination. People will be fighting for colonies and Australia will try to hold onto their colonies.

Germany promised not to resume unrestricted submarine warfare but they broke that promise and resumed it and sank 6 American ships shortly after. The Zimmerman telegram led to the U.S entering the war since this included Germany communicating with Mexico saying that they will give them U.S territory if they allied with them. British intelligence intercepted this and it ran in the American Newspaper. After this many Americans concluded that war with Germany was necessary.
