Adjective Phrase

A prepositional phrase that modifies a noun or pronoun.

Adverb Phrase

A prepositional phrase that modifies a verb, an adjective, or an adverb.

Participle Phrase Example

ENCOURAGED BY HIS FAMILY, he submitted his book of poems for publications.

Prepositional Phrase

Includes a preposition, the object of the preposition, and any modifiers of that object.

Infinitive Phrase Examples

Reginald wants TO GO TO THE BEACH WITH US ON SATURDAY. The team's desire TO WIN THE GAME was evident. Chico was unable TO PLAY IN THE FOOTBALL GAME.

Gerund Phrase Examples

STUDYING REGULARLY, leads to better grades. My brother likes WORKING AT THE TRAVEL AGENCY.

Gerund Examples

SWIMMING quickly tired us. Janetta's hobby is KNITTING. He gave STUDYING all his attention. In COOKING, use salt sparingly.

Infinitive Examples

TO FLY was an ambition of humans for many centuries. His attempt TO FLY was a failure. Everyone in the neighborhood was willing TO HELP.

Appositive

A noun or pronoun placed beside another noun or pronoun to identify or describe it.

Gerund

A verb form ending in -ing that is used as a noun.

Infinitive

A verb form that can be used as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. Most infinitives begin with to.

Participle

A verb form that can be used as an adjective.

Gerund Phrase

Consists of a gerund and any modifiers or complements the gerund has. The entire phrase is used as a noun.

Participle Phrase

Consists of a participle and any modifiers or complements the participle has. The entire phrase is used as an adjective.

Appositive Phrase

Consists of an appositive and any modifiers the appositive has.

Infinitive Phrase

Consists of an infinitive and any modifiers or complements the infinitive has. The entire phrase can be used as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb.

Participle Examples

WAVING, the campers boarded the bus. The BAKED chicken with yellow rice tasted delicious.
