Define Olecranon Bursitis

•Elbow bursitis, also called olecranon bursitis, occurs when fluid collects in the bursa that lies over the extensor surface of the elbow, called the olecranon bursa

Treatment of Olecranon Bursitis

1. Avoid trauma to elbow 2. ACE wrap for compression 3. NSAIDs and warm compresses for pain 4. Aspiration *ONLY* if infection is suspected 5. Surgery is reserved for *septic bursal sacs* that are unresponsive to conservative management

Diagnosis of Olecranon Bursitis

1. Diagnosis is clinical 2. Imaging is unnecessary unless there is concern for traumatic injury or osteomyelitis In cases of infection, bursal aspiration is indicated Septic fluid: purulent, glucose ratio less than 50%, WBC > 3000/mcL, polymorphonuclear cells more than 50%, and a + Gram stain for bacteria

Causes of Olecranon Bursitis

1. Fall or direct blow 2. Prolonged irritation from excessive leaning on elbows (certain occupations, *chronic lung disease patient*) 3. Rheumatoid arthritis, gout
