Introduction to Cloud Computing
Items tab
A tab located on the vRealize user dashboard that is used to show any owned items.
Offline Data Transfer (ODT) service
A vCloud disaster recovery service that can be used to back up data to an external storage device that is provided by a vCloud Air operator and then ship it back to the operator when needed.
dedicated cloud service
A vCloud service that allows an organization to build a private virtual data center on a platform that is dedicated to use by only that organization.
routed network
A vCloud virtual data center internal network type that connects to the Edge gateway and provided virtual machines access to the external network.
isolated network
A vCloud virtual data center network internal-only network type that does not connect to the Internet. It is similar to a Host only network in the VMware Workstation 12 Pro environment.
portlets
Data frames on the vRealize user dashboard that provide specific information including My Items and Event Calendar.
BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)
Refers to the trend for users to bring their own devices into the office or classroom either to access the Internet or to access their corporate data, Implementing BYOD often requires additional network and computer resources to run the virtual machines needed to support mobile devices.
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
The organization responsible for setting standards for cloud computing and other technologies. Some standards covered in this book include IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS.
vRealize
A VMware software product that an organization can install in their vSphere environment to host on-demand cloud services and monitor and manage the virtualized infrastructure.
vSphere Replication appliance
A VMware software product that can copy virtual machines to another location, within or between clusters, and makes that copy available for recovery through the VMware vSphere Web Client or through the orchestration of a full disaster recovery product such as VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager.
private clouds
A cloud hosted in on-premises data centers for greater flexibility and security where law requires.
RaaS (Recovery as a Service)
A cloud service that allows the organization to replicate data between the local data center and a virtual data center within the cloud.
cloud computing
A form of processing that provides on-demand services based on a virtualized set of resources that are independent from the physical location.
Edge gateway
A logical cloud device in a virtual data center that provides routing and firewall services to connect internal virtual machines to the external or public network.
Virtual Private Cloud service
A multi-tenancy service in that multiple organizations will share the same hardware that is logically divided into separate virtual data centers.
vCloud Air
A public IaaS cloud environment that consumers can use to create and manage their own virtual data center, extend their existing data center, or subscribe to disaster recovery services.
vCloud Connector
A server appliance that is installed into a vSphere center in order to provide a network connection to the cloud.
machine blueprint
A service specification that defines the resources and parameters for a virtual machine. After bring published to a catalog, blueprints allow users to deploy virutal machines they are authorized to them.
vCloud Director
A software solution from VMware that allows an organization to use its own local vSphere infrastructure to host cloud environments that permit internal or external consumers to build virtual data centers.
Requests tab
A tab located on the vRealize user dashboard that contains a history of the user's vRealize automation service requests along with the status of any open requests,
Inbox tab
A tab located on the vRealize user dashboard that displays any messages that are currently in the user's inbox.
Catalog tab
A tab located on the vRealize user dashboard that is used to open the service catalog from which a user can deploy services that they have been entitled to.
