upgrade

A major change to a software package that enhances the functionality and features of the software, while also correcting bugs and vulnerabilities.

NMap

A network utility designed to assist in detecting, identifying and monitoring the devices on your network. Frequently used as a vulnerability scanner.

66 block

A older type of punch-down block designed to terminate telephone connections.

patch panel

A panel of data receptors which can be mounted to a wall or a rack and which provides a central termination point when many patch cables converge in a single location.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride)

A plenum rated cable in coated with a flame-resistant jacket that produces less smoke than regular cable coated with _______, which is made from cheaper plastic that is toxic when rubber is burned.

patch cable

A relatively short section (usually between 3 and 25 feet) of cabling with connectors on both ends.

RFP (Request for Proposal)

A request to vendors to submit a proposal for a product or service your company wants to purchase.

punchdown tool

A tool used to punch individual wires from a network cable into their slots to terminate the cable.

STP (shielded twisted pair)

A type of copper-based cable containing twisted-pair wires that are not only individually insulated, but are also surrounded by a shielding made of a metallic substance such as foil.

UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair)

A type of copper-based cable that consists f one or more insulated twisted-pair wires encased in a plastic sheath.

EMI (electromagnetic interference)

A type of interference that may be caused by motors, power lines, televisions, copiers, fluorescent lights, or other sources of electrical activity. Reduces the possibility of noise.

wiki

A website that can be edited by users. You can add files and photos, easily create links between ages, group pages by different criteria, and make choices about which users have which privileges on the site.

wall jacks

A work are often contains wall jacks. The TIA/EIA standards calls for each of these to contain at least one voice and one data outlet.

data room

Also called data closet, data center, equipment room, or telecommunication room, this is the enclosed space that holds network equipment.

hardware

Configuration files, model number, serial number, location on the network, and technical support contact

KVW (keyboard, video, and mouse)

Connects to a single console to provde a central control portal for all devices on the rack.

Backbone Cabling

Consists of the cables or wireless links that provide interconnection between the entrance facility and MDF, and betweem the MDF and IDFs. (often composed of fiber-optic cables)

SOW (statement of work)

Documents in detail the work that must be completed for a particular project, and includes specifics such as tasks, deliverables, standards, payment schedule, and work timeline.

MOU (memorandum of understanding)

Documents the intentions of two or more parties to enter into a binding agreement, or contract, and is sometimes used between an informal handshake and the legally binding signatures on contacts.

3 feet

Install cable at least _______ away from fluorescent lights or other sources of EMI.

Operating system upgrade

Prior to the upgrade, make a complete backup of the system to roll back, restore the entire system from the backup; uninstall an operating system upgrade only as a last resort.

IDF (intermediate distribution frame)

Provides an intermediate connection between the MDF and the end-user equipment on each floor and in each building. The TIA/EIA specifies at least one of these per floor.

inventory management

Refers to the monitoring and maintaining of all the assets that make up a network.

TIA/EIA

Short for Telecommunications Industry Association/Electronics Industries Alliance, a standards and trade organization composed as an alliance of trade associations for electronics manufacturers in the United States.

UTP, STP or fiber-optic cable

The TIA/EIA recognizes three possible cabling types for horizontal cabling. What are they?

Rack Diagram

These drawings show the devices stacked in a rack system and are typically drawn to scale.

work area

This area encompasses workstations, printers, and other network devices, and all the patch cables, wall jacks, and horizontal cabling necessary t connect these devices to a data room.

Horizontal Cabling

This is a cabling that connects workstations to the closest data room and to switches housed in the room.

Shared application upgrade

Use the application's automatic uninstall utility, or maintain a complete copy of the previous installation of the application and reinstall it over the upgrade.

operating system patch

Use the patch's automatic uninstall utility.

Client software upgrade

Use the upgrade's automatic uninstall utility, or reinstall the previous version of the client on top of the upgrade.

patch

a software ____ is a correction, improvements, or enhancements to software. It corrects a bug, closes a vulnerability, or adds minor enhancements to only part of the software, leaving most of the code untouched.

software

version number, vendor, licensing, and technical support contact

MLA (master license agreement)

Grants a license from a creator, developer, or producer to a third party for the purposes of marketing or sublicensing, or distributing the product to consumers

network diagrams

Graphical representations of a networks devices and connections. These diagrams may show physical layout, logical topology, IP address reserves, names of major network devices, and types of transmission media.

racks

Make good use of space in data rooms and ensure adequate spacing, access and ventilation for the devices they house.

plenum

The area above the ceiling tile or below the subfloor in a building.

MDF (main distribution frame/facility)

The centralized point of interconnection for an organization's LAN or WAN.

demarc (demarcation point)

19 inches and 23 inches

The front of the rack (or frame) is how wide?

entrance facility

The location where an incoming network service (whether phone, Internet, or long-distance service) enters a building and connects with the building's backbone cabling.

100 meters

The maximum allowable distance for horizontal cabling is?

System Life Cycle

The process of designing, implementing, and maintaining an entire network is called.

Patch Management

The process of monitoring the release of new patches, testing them for use on networked devices, and installing them.

rollback

The process of reverting to a previous version of a software application after attempting to patch or upgrade it.

110 block

The type of punchdown block used on data networks.
