customer relationship management (CRM) software

a suite of software or online services used to store and organize client and sales prospect information, as well as automating and synchronizing other customer-facing business functions such as marketing, customer service, and technical support; this software can be very useful for those who have to keep track of many customers or a lengthy sales or product implementation process.

web authoring software

advanced tools for creating web pages (ex: Microsoft Expression Web and Adobe Dreamweaver)

web-based software

aka cloud computing; latest development in software delivery and accessibility; software is hosted on an online provider's website and you access it over the Internet using your browser--you don't have to have software installed on your computer to get work done (ex: Google (Google Docs), IBM, Microsoft (Office Web Apps), and Oracle)

application where numbers rule; performs calculations that range from single to complex (ex: Microsoft Excel)

software suite

bundles several products together; key benefit is uses a common user interface, share data between products easily, and shared features that make functionality such as graphing available to all the products.

entertainment software

category of software that includes computer games you play on your computer or game console.

word processor software

create documents that include sophisticated formatting; change text fonts; add effects such as bold, italics, and underlining; include tables, photos, drawings and links to online content

animation software

enables you to animate objects and create interactive content (ex: Adobe Flash)

software as a service (SaaS)

have access to data and applications all hosted on a remote computer server and invisible--don't need to install software; offers online applications and collaborations to professionals and small businesses for a monthly subscription fee (ex: Office 365)

application software

helps you do many things such as get your work done, learn something new, communicate with others, create art, or place games

contact management software

helps you store and manage information about the people you work or otherwise interact with; you might keep track of client information, family members, or people who are in your book club.

audio software

helps you work with music files and record and edit audio used for podcasts or as audio files to be shared with others (ex: Audacity or Sony Creative)

organizer software

includes multiple features; Microsoft Outlook combines schedule, contact, and email management; Windows Live, a web-based service, includes a calendar feature plus email and SkyDrive for document storage and sharing.

database software

manages large quantities of data; organizes data into related lists and retrieves useful information from these lists (ex: Microsoft Access)

web-based training

on-line classes and tools

beta version

the second stage of testing of a software product

handwriting recognition software

turn notes written using a stylus into text on mobile devices

photo editing software

used by design professionals to enhance photo quality or apply special effects such as blurring elements or feathering the edges of a photo; (ex: Adobe Photoshop)

desktop publishing (DTP) software

used by design professionals to lay out pages for books, magazines, brochures, product packaging, and other print materials; most popular are Adobe InDesign, Corel Draw, and QuarkXPress.

screen capture software

useful for those writing software documentation or books about software, programming, or other technology; (ex: basic screen capture app is Snipping Tool; other third-party programs are Snagit or HyperSnap-DX)

presentation software

uses the concept of individual slides that form a slideshow; slides may contain bulleted lists of key concepts, graphics, tables, animations, hyperlinks to web pages, and diagrams and charts (ex: Microsoft PowerPoint, KeyNote for the Mac, or Impress from OpenOffice)

WYSIWYG

what you see is what you get (used by most web authoring tools)

speech recognition software

you speak into a microphone connected to or built into your computer; the software turns the sounds into text that you can then edit into a word processor.
