Why is electronic storage faster?

It has no moving parts.

CD-ROM, R, or RW Read only

CD-ROM

What is a memory card used for?

Storing data in digital cameras, mobile phones, MP3 Players, and video game consoles. Can store anywhere from 64 MB to 2 Terabytes.

What is memory?

The area in a computer that temporarily holds data while being processed.

What is the CPU?

The brains of the computer

What are the most popular storage devices?

USB Drives, internal and external hard disks, CD's and DVD's, and cloud storage.

What is a kilobyte?

1,024 bytes. Kilo means thousand.

What are the 3 kinds of storage?

1. Magnetic Storage 2. Optical Storage 3. Electronic Storage (Flash Storage)

Hexa-core

6 Cores

CD or DVD? Holds 4.7 GB

DVD

What is a hard drive?

A mass storage device located inside the computer's system unit (tower)

What is a flash drive?

A portable storage device that uses electronic storage and has an integrated USB Port. Can store anywhere from a few hundred MB to 64 GB

What is a terabyte?

Tera means trillion. About 1 trillion bytes. 1024 Gigabytes.

What is storage?

The place in the computer where data is held while it is not needed for processing

Dual Core

2 cores

How many hertz are typical CPU's?

3 Hertz + range

Quad Core

4 cores

Octa-core

8 cores

CD or DVD? Hold 650 MB to 1GB

CD

CD or DVD? Used to store music, software, and documents

CD

CD-ROM, R, or RW Burn to once, then is read only

CD-R

CD-ROM, R, or RW Burn to as many times until it runs out of space

CD-RW

What is the motherboard?

Circuit located in the computers system unit.

The motherboard holds many of the important components of the computer. What are they?

Circuits: the paths data follows in the computer Silicon Chips: Small computer chips that contain millions of transistors and other electronic components that control the flow of electrical current on the motherboard.

Why use the cloud?

Cost: Allows companies to pay for storage space rather than personnel to service them Convenience: can access from anywhere w internet access Safety: Will not crash Collaboration: Easier to share with people.

CD or DVD? Used to store photos and videos; allows better graphics

DVD

What is a Solid State Drive?

Data is stored into devices using electronic semiconductors that are built from solid material and have no moving parts. Uses flash memory. Found inside the computer in replace of a hard drive. They are faster because they have no moving parts and are more reliable.

Data Vs Information

Data= Raw facts has not context; it's just numbers and text Information= processed data Data becomes information when it is processed and presented to someone in a meaningful way (email, powerpoint, letter, spreadsheet)

What are the types of computers?

Desktops, Laptops, Ultrabooks, Netbooks, Tablets.

What is a bit?

Each 0 or 1 is a bit. It is the smallest unit of information that a computer handles.

What should you do before buying a computer?

Educate yourself

What are some examples of magnetic storage devices?

Floppy disks, hard drives, digital tape

What is a gigabyte?

Giga means billion. About 1 billion bytes. 1024 megabytes.

Processor speed is measured in...

Hertz

What does hertz represent?

How quickly the CPU can interpret instructions from the operating system and applications

What does RAM stand for and what does it do?

Random Access Memory The memory that holds data as you manipulate (process) it. RAM is volatile No data can be stored when the computer is powered off. Data is lost when the computer loses power.

1/3/5 rule

In 1 year: your product will be beaten by a new product In 3 years: It will be common technology In 5 years: It will be obsolete

What does ROM stand for and what does it do?

Read Only Memory Contains the instructions when a computer boots up NON Volatile It can be read by not changed by the user The data is not erased when the computer is switched off. It is stored permanently.

What is a floppy disk?

Really small way of storing data. Only holds a little over a MB. Becoming obsolete.

What does a video card do?

Refreshes the pixels on your screen many times per second. The more it refreshes, the more solid your screen appears.

Examples of Electronic Storage devices?

SD Cards, SSD (solid state drives), Flash Drives

What are some other factors to consider when buying a computer?

Monitor, CD/DVD Drive, bundled software, warranties.

Where is the CPU located?

On the motherboard

Describe the Intel Processors

i3: for simple work i5: basic work + better features i7: great quality for intense gaming and video editing

What is magnetic storage?

A means of recording or saving data onto disks or tapes by magnetizing particles.

What is a petabyte?

About 1 quadrillion bytes.

Pentium

A brand of processors created by the company Intel intended to middle to high end computers.

What is a byte?

A combination of 8 bits. Represents a single letter, symbol, or digit.

What is a storage device?

A device used to record (store) data

What is an external hard drive?

A hard drive that has its own separate case and sits outside of your computer's system unit.

Celeron

A low to middle end computer processor used for basic applications. Targeted for budget customers

What is a multi core processor?

A single chip that contains 2 or more independent CPU's called "cores"

What is an exabyte?

About one quintillion bytes.

Advantages of multi core processors?

Allows to processor to operate faster. Each core is like a separate processor.

Software as a Service

Allows you to rent access to software. It is not installed onto your PC.

What is binary code?

It is the code that computers use to communicate and process information. Represented by numbers, letters, symbols, etc

What is used by some businesses to backup and achieve large amounts of data?

Magnetic tape

What is a megabyte?

Mega means million. About 1 mil bytes. 1024 Kilobytes.

What is Electronic (Flash) Storage?

The use of a chip to electronically save, erase, or reprogram data

What is optical storage?

The use of low powered lasers to save (burn) and read data from CD's and DVD's

Why aren't SSD's as common?

Their cost and storage capacity.
