What is the origin of the term Ivy League?

In 1954 the presidents announced the adoption of a yearly round-robin schedule in football. The term was used to refer to the league of the 8 private colleges. The phrase is no longer limited to athletics, and now represents an educational philosophy inherent to the nation's oldest schools.
