These plagues were directly set against the gods of Egypt. God had systematically dismantled every "god" worshipped by the Egyptians thereby showing Moses and the ultimate nation of Israel that it would do them no good to bring any of these "gods" with them during their journey out. Whe moses returend from Midian to Egypt and urged Pahraoh to free his Hebrew slaves, he kept refusing. God sent plagues to punish Egypt until the Pharoh finally released teh Hebrews

According to the story, Haman cast lots to determine the day upon which to exterminate the Jews.

Three Pilgrimage Festivals

known as the Shalosh Regalim, are three major festivals in Judaism — Pesach (Passover), Shavuot (Weeks), and Sukkot (Tents or Booths) — when the Israelites living in ancient Israel and Judea would make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, as commanded by the Torah. In Jerusalem, they would participate in festivities and ritual worship in conjunction with the services of the kohanim ("priests") at the Temple in Jerusalem.

Seder meal

main meal during the feast of Passover; involves having a feast consisting of egg, green veggies, salt water, shank bone, bitter herbs, charoset, and matzah......eat unleavened bread (matzah) to remembere the urgency of the departure, ad bitter herbs as a reminder of slavery, so they wouldn't imppost it on to other peoples.

Jewish Sabbath

sunset to sunset on friday and ends on saturday at sunset., a day of rest and worship: Saturday for most Jews "to cease" the ancient Jewish weekly day of rest and absention to remember God. it extends from dusk friday to dusk saturday. A family meal begins sabbath with 2 candle lightings, thanking God, and sharing wine and bread.

Hebrews

the ancient name for the Semitic people of Israel tradtionally descended from Abraham. it is found earliest in texts about them in egypt. after the babylonian exile, the name Jew is also used.

Romans in 70 ad

the attackers had breached Jerusalem's outer walls and began a systematic ransacking of the city. The assault culminated in the burning and destruction of the Temple that served as the center of Judaism. In victory, slaughtered thousands. Of those sparred from death: thousands more were enslaved and sent to toil in the mines of Egypt, others were dispersed to arenas throughout the Empire to be butchered for the amusement of the public. The Temple's sacred relics were taken to Rome where they were displayed in celebration of the victory.

Torah

the first of three divisions of the Hebrew Scriptures comprising the first five books of the Hebrew Bible considered as a unit.......... a teaching.. primary sacred text of Judaism, the history of God's cosmic creation and guidance for Israel through its early history.

Tanakh

the hebrew bible, the sacred text of Judaism is divided into the torah (exodus), prohppets( Isaiah,Issac, Jacob), and writings (psalms)

the most powerful king of biblical Israel, established tehe capital in Jersualem and ruled from 1010-970 BCE. as a boy defeated the giant Goliath. became a warlord fighting the philistines. when king, expanded Israelite territory and married abthsheba, second son was solomon. many Psalms are attributed to him.

Exodus

the second book of the Old Testament: tells of the departure of the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt led by Moses, a journey by a large group to escape from a hostile environment, the second book in the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible that records the story of the enslavement of the Hebrew people in Egypt and their subsequent divine deliverance.. The escape of the ancient Hebrews into slavery in Egypt, around 1250 BCE, led by moses to the Promised Land.

Jewish Covenant

Special relationship between Jews and God. God and Noah, God and Abraham, God and Moses, Jews = God's chosen people as long as they worship only Him, Experience of Abraham that God promised to be with the Jewish people throughout their Hx Prophetic Message= Contribute big events to praise God. Amos & Isaiah- God doesn't want praise, but justice (unconditional love)
