Key Issue and Accountability At the beginning of each watch, the on-coming area sergeant will

confirm that all keys in his area of responsibility are accounted for by number of sets and key ring numbers

Key control will include methods for ensuring that only authorized staff members

control all locking devices and keys/locks are used effectively to ensure the safety and security of the facility

Supervisors will at regular intervals

inspect keys issued to staff members: All employees will account for their facility keys: at all times

Any employee inadvertently carrying operational keys home will be required to immediately return to the facility with the operational keys. Each member will be personally

issued staff keys that provide access to all officer

Operational keys passed on from one officer to the next will be

logged in the column titled "Issued Key Ring

All keys not present in the area's key box must be

logged out to the member issued those items on the Supervisors Security/Sanitation Accountability Report (P-1616)

Each set of operational and emergency keys will have a

metal tag attached for identification

Keys will be physically handed from one staff member to another

not thrown or slid

Unauthorized possession, alteration, marking, duplication, manufacture, or making impressions

of keys by staff members is prohibited

A Noteworthy Incidents Report is completed appropriately

on the agency intranet to include all of the information in 1-3 above and what efforts were made to locate the keys

Keys will not be left unattended in locks

or used to lift or pull open a lockable door or hatch

Upon transfer or termination of employment with the Sheriff's Office

or when otherwise requested, all issued keys will be promptly returned by the staff member

Any discrepancies must be

resolved before the off-going watch personnel are relieved

Emergency keys and safety equipment issued from the area's key box will be logged in the "Comments"

section with the time issued and time returned

During normal business hours the keys will be turned in to

the Security Unit

After hours and on weekends

the keys will be turned in to the on- duty Watch Lieutenant: who will ensure they are returned to the Security Unit

In the event a key or a set of keys is discovered lost or damaged

the staff members will immediately notify his supervisor and submit anP-0004)

Staff members may also be subject

to disciplinary action.

Staff members will not make reference

to key numbers or lock identification information in the presence of inmates or visitors

Force will not be used

to operate any locks

Handling of Keys A. Staff members will not leave keys

unattended at anytime while on duty

B. Operational keys not in use

will be kept in an approved secured location

Any known incident

will be reported in writing to the Assistant Chief. B. If criminal acts are involved: the staff member may be referred for prosecution

Keys carried by staff members

will be secured on their person
