Function Keys

F1 through F12 may have a variety of different uses or no use at all. When used with a modifier key carries out different operation. For example ALT + F4 will close an open program or document.

Navigation Keys

Are used to move the cursor around on the screen. They include the four Arrow keys, PageUp, PageDown, Home and End keys.

Toggle Keys

Change the action of another key if it is pressed before the new key. The toggle keys do not have a specific section on the keyboard. Eg. Pressing Caps lock before typing letters will turn the letters to uppercase. Toggle keys: Caps lock, Num lock, Scroll lock, Insert

Alt + F4

Close

Alphanumeric Keys

Contains both numbers and letters on the same keys. Typically, they are found on cellular phones and laptops.

Print Screen (prt sc)

Creates a snapshot of what is on the screen

Windows Logo + L or Start + L:

Lock the computer (OR CTRL+ALT+DELETE → Lock )

Moves the cursor at the beginning of a line in word processor and when used in conjunction with the CTRL key moves the cursor to the beginning of the document

Direction key (Left, Right, Up and Down Arrows)

Moves the cursor left, right, up, or down in a field.

PageDown

Moves the screen down one screen page

Page Up

Moves the screen up one screen page

Home or CTRL+Left Arrow

Moves to the cursor to the beginning of a line in word. When used with conjunction with 'Ctrl' it moves the cursor to the beginning of the document

End or Ctrl + Right Arrow

Moves to the cursor to the end of a line. When used in conjunction with the 'Ctrl' key it moves the cursor to the end of the document

Scroll Lock

This is a toggle key that changes the effect of the cursor movement keys. When the Scroll Lock mode is on, the arrow keys would scroll the contents of a text window instead of moving the cursor

Application Key

This key has a design on the keyboard that looks like a list of words on a piece of paper. This is a shortcut for right click and will display the contents in the start menu

Windows Key

This key is used to display the start menu.

Enter Key

This key is usually marked return or Enter and is sometimes labeled with a large arrow. This is used to move the cursor to the beginning of a new line, blank line, start a new paragraph or enter a command

QWERTY keyboard

This keyboard gets its name from the order of the first six keys on the top left letter row.

Dvorak Keyboard

This keyboard was designed for speed typing. The most common keys are placed in positions that are easy to reach by the users.

Braille keyboard

This type of keyboard is designed to allow users who are visually impaired to type and enter data into a computer system

Pause/Break

Was previously used in programming and debugging applications. In most current programs, it is non-functioning.
