Why is carbon so important and why is carbons role in the construction of macro molecules so important?
Carbon is a non-metal. Carbon can also form up to 4 bonds. It can also form many different kinds of bonds and form essential compounds.
What is the importance of valence electrons in bonding and their role in chemical reactions?
During chemical reactions the valence electrons are transferred from the metal to non-metal. which is a non-metal. According to the octet rule the atoms will gain, loose, or share electrons through an ionic or covalent bond in order to have a complete electron shell.
Types of elements in protein
H O N C
Foods with protein
Meat, poultry, beans, peas, seeds, eggs, seafood, nuts, tofu
What is this a structure of?
Nucleotide
What type of chemical bond does carbon and oxygen form.
Since carbon and oxygen share electrons and there non-metals they are a covalent bond.
What are nucleotides?
The building blocks of nucleic acids.
What do you look at when you compare and contrast macromolecular structures?
The elements in each structure. Ex. One might have nitrogen the other might not. They both might have oxygen.
How does electronegativity relate to valence electrons? How does this trend relate to the organization of elements in the periodic table?
The more valence electrons you have the more electronegativiety you have. So when you move from left to right, electronegativity increases.
What types of foods provide you with carbs and amino acids?
Tofu Eggs Banana Almond
building blocks of proteins
amino acids
How do you find the valence electrons of an element?
by looking at what column the element is on
function of proteins
essential for the growth, development, and repair of all body tissues Structural enzymes
What happens during a covalent bond?
it shares the electron
What is an ionic bond between?
metal and non metal
Building blocks of carbohydrates
monosaccharides
Building blocks of nucliec acids
nucleotides
Function of Carbohydrates?
provide energy, fiber, and energy to cell walls
function of lipids
store energy
function of nucliec acids
store genetic information
What happens during a ionic bond?
transfer of electrons (non-metals take from metals)
What is a covalent bond between?
two nonmetals
Foods with lipids
- butter -oil -mayo - cheese - red meats - chocolate - ice cream
Building blocks of lipids
3 fatty acids and 1 glycerol
Determine the number of bonds oxygen can form and WHY it can form that many bonds.
8-6=2 Carbon can form 2 bonds because it needs 2 more to fill its electron shell.
Foods that have carbohydrates
Anything made from plants Rice Bread Fruits Vegetables
How do you determine the number of bonds an element can form?
By subtracting it from 8
Types of elements in carbohydrates
