parametric modeling

-complex -history -parameters -relationship

Direct Modeling

-flexible -no history -geometry

Limitations of parametric modeling?

-things can get moved around during construction, leading to confusion (specifically if the GC is not aware there was a change) -Make a change, leading to change something else you dont want to change -stakeholder and their level of knowledge

Mechanical parametric modeling tool

A general purpose tool, with only generic objects, that can be used to model anything; can be used for design, analysis/simulation or production planning

BIM

A specially purpose parametric modeling tool, with predefined building objects, that have been defined for general types of behavior, but are now tailored to different project domains: architectural intent, fabrication, energy simulation and structural simulation

Parametric modeling allows for

construction of an abstract model of a structure

Parametric relationship examples

• A floor is attached to the enclosing walls. When the wall moves, the floor updates to remain connected to the walls. • A series of equal distant windows have been placed along a wall. When the length of the wall changes, the windows redistribute to remain equal distance across the length of the wall.

Parametric Relationships

• Relationships among elements in a building model • Enable software to coordinate and management changes made to the model • Created automatically by software or by the user
