Mass, Volume, Weight and Density
How are mass and weight different? Choose TWO of the following:
-weight measures the pull of gravity on an object -mass is the amount of matter in an object
A small box is 5 centimeters long. 2 centimeters wide, and 4 centimeters high. What is the volume?
40 cubic centimeters
A bowling ball has a MASS of 5,000 grams on Earth on the moon the mass will be
5,000 grams
A science teacher finds the density of 50 milliliters (ml) of corn syrup with his students. After dividing the mass and volume they arrive at a density of 1.4 grams per milliliter (g/ml). What should be the density of the 100ml of corn syrup
50 g/ml
What do we commonly use to measure mass?
Balance scales are commonly used to measure mass. In grams and kilograms.
What is Density?
Density is dividing the mass by the volume. It describes the heaviness of an item. Density can also refer to how tightly packed a material or molecule is.
How could equal volumes of different substances have different masses?
If they have different density then they will have masses because density = mass/volume.
What is Mass?
Large body of matter with no definite shape
What do we commonly use to measure weight?
Mass times gravity equals weight is measured by a spring scale.
What do we commonly use to measure volume?
One way to find the volume of an object is to completely submerge the object in water and measure the volume of water that is displaced by the object. We commonly use a graduated cylinder to measure volume.
How do you make an object denser without changing its mass?
Since density = mass divide volume, you would need to make the volume smaller.
A graduated cylinder has 30 ml of water in it. A small rock is dropped into the cylinder and it is now up to the 34ml line. What is the volume of the rock?
The Volume of the rock is 4 mls. because you have 30 ml of water, then you drop a small rock. 34-30=4.
What is Volume?
The amount of space that a substance or object occupied. It is most often described in terms of meters cubed (m^3).
If an object is LESS dense than water will it FLOAT or SINK?
Then it would float
The amount of space an object takes up is its
Volume
What is the formula for Volume for regular shape objects?
Volume = Length times Width times Height.
What is Weight?
Weight is a force that depends on the mass of the object and the acceleration of gravity
If you were to travel from Earth to the Moon explain what would happen to your mass and weight.
Your scale weight would be less due to the moon's lighter gravity, but your body mass would not change.
What do we commonly use to measure density?
