MDST 1001 - Kahoot III
Strong ties
Actual friends that you hang out with and communicate with.
What kind of media might inform you about American Culture?
Both news and entertainment media can be informative
For communication what kind of ties matter?
Both strong and weak ties matter because either way on social media you are still exposing a multitude of people to important activist matters. In this case "Slacktivism" is not as trivial as one might think.
Which traditional view of audiences was the first to study media effects longitudinally (aka over long periods of time)?
Cultivation Theory (you cultivate over a long period of time)
Mediums affect meanings
Depending on the kind of medium you use it can have an effect how you digest information and resonate with it. Ex: JFK and Nixon debates on TV, JFK looked great and knew how to compose himself while Nixon did not.
Media are plural
Don't get informed via one source but rather many. For example, the news and even sports
What does not apply to cultural approaches to mediated citizenship?
Emotional engagement does not matter as much as information acquisition (it does)
The encoding/decoding model
Encoding - creating meaning at the site of production Decoding - Audiences interpreting meanings. Audiences can either embrace the meaning or objectify it. More than one way in which you can interpret and understand media text.
T or F: An "opinion leader" must be a well-known person, like a celebrity or public figure
False; Two-step flow theory says that an opinion leader can be anyone, especially on social media (influencers)
T or F: Participatory culture is inherently democratizing. Why?
False; participatory culture can be political and democratized but not inherently so as it depends on context what people do. Ex. voting on American Idol
T or F: Tufekci suggests that "slacktivism" is distracting people from productive political engagement.
False; slacktivism is something like posting Instagram stories where you're doing the bare minimum and it doesn't really have much meaning. Although, it is important because it brings more attention to the algorithm so that more people see it and are exposed. Because of this, slacktivism is technically valid.
What is not an example of fan activities in the civic and political exam discussed in class?
Friday Night Lights fan sending eye drops and lightbulbs to the producers
Weak ties
Random acquaintances you may have met a couple of times in class or on social media
The producer would call it a love story, but some people see it as an abusive relationship. This can be explained by...
The encoding/decoding model
Cultivation theory
The more heavily we watch media over a long period of time we tend to over or underestimate what actually happens in real life. Ex: crime in TV shows and thinking that it happens all the time
According to Dannah Boyd, what is the most dangerous problem in our media landscape?
The weaponization of media and infromation to gaslight the public
According to Zeynep Tufecki, how should social media be used to create a strong social movement?
They should be used as tools in conjunction with in-person organizing
T or F: Jenkins et al. Argues that an emphasis on participation in today's digital culture has displaced the focus on resistance.
True
T or F: Tapping into the collective intelligence of video gamers is important because it may help us solve real problems
True
Gaslight
Weaponize information to spread distrust among the public of everything and anything, making it hard to factually confirm information and data.
What is a question you would ask while conducting a participatory culture analysis?
What aspects of this media text do audiences embrace or resist?
Politics is as ubiquitous as advertising
You see politics just as much as you see advertising. Political messages are all around us not just on the news.
