a device that measures peak expiratory flow rate (maximum speed of expiration) and provides an evaluation of bronchiole function; used to monitor asthmatics
tuning fork
a device that produces sound through vibration; used to test hearing
ECG/EKG machine
a device that records both the intensity of the electrical impulses and the actual time it takes for each part of the cardiac cycle to occur

a device to obtain the length of an infant; has markers for inches and/or centimeters with a stationary head section and flexible foot section

a device used to block vision is one eye while eye remains open; used during vision testing
automated external defibrillator (AED)
a device used to cause defibrillation through application of electrical shock to the heart through electrodes placed on the chest
pocket mask
a device used to cover the patient's nose and mouth to allow ventilation of the lungs manually by blowing into its one-way valve
bag valve mask (BVM)

hand sanitizer
a gel containing a disinfectant chemical (usually 60% or greater isopropyl alcohol) used on hands to prevent the spread of infection

a machine that uses high frequency sound waves to generate a picture of internal structures

a medical instrument used to obtain the temperature of an individual from under the tongue; giving the reading electronically
tympanic thermometer
a medical instrument using infrared technology to obtain the temperature of an individual from the tympanic membrane (eardrum) giving the reading electronically
cast tape
a mesh roll with water activated resin that hardens to create immobility when applied to an injured extremity
tape measure
a narrow strip of cloth marked off in units of inches or centimeter used for measuring
pulse oximeter
a probe placed on the earlobe or finger; an infrared light passes through the tissue and the amount of light absorbed by oxygenated hemoglobin is measured as a percentage; pulse rate is also measured
mayo stand
a removable tray on a base that adjusts height and can be easily rolled on its set of two wheels; typically made of stainless steel
oxygen tank
a reservoir that holds oxygen to be delivered by means of mask or cannula; includes gauges that show fill level; includes a device to manage the amount of oxygen being delivered; must supported by a rolling stand or other means to remain upright
hot/cold pack
a reusable pack of non-toxic gel that can be heated through boiling or microwave or cooled in a freezer to be used for hot or cold therapy as it conforms to the body to relieve pain or reduce swelling
bulb syringe
a rubber device with a bulb on one end and a pierced pointed end that can be compressed to suction fluids or express fluids
specimen container
a small container with a lid used to collect or store laboratory specimens; may be sterile or non-sterile; may include a temperature indicator; may have a preservative if used for specific types of samples (e.g. tissue)
disinfectant spray
a solution used to disinfect surfaces; usually a 1:10 solution using a bleach or hypochlorite component

evacuated blood tubes
evacuated vacuum containers used for collection of blood samples; color of tops is indicative of different additives
splint roll
fiberglass or plaster sheets in various widths end encased in a soft material; can be cut to needed lengths for splinting of injured extremities to give stability; exothermic reaction and hardening occur with water application
nebulizer
forces air through a medication chamber that converts liquid medication into an aerosolized form to be inhaled though a mask or mouthpiece; bronchodilators to open the airways or steroids to reduce inflammation in them
gooseneck exam light
light source on a flexible stand that allows to direct the light at areas being examined
glucometer
point of care (POC) laboratory device used to obtain results of a patient's blood glucose
table paper rolls
rolls of paper to be attached to the exam table and allows easy change of surface that will be in contact with the patient
fecal occult blood test (FOBT)
simple laboratory test used to determine the presence of blood in a stool sample
