how does medigap work with medicare advantage plans

if you have a MAP it is ILLEGAL for anyone to sell you medigap unless you are switching back to original medicare if you have a medigap policy and join a MAP, you should drop the medigap policy your medigap policy CANNOT be used to pay your MAP copayments, deductibles, and premiums in most cases if you drop your medigap for a MAP you wont get it back if you join a MAP for the first time and you arent happy with it, youll have special rights to buy a medigap policy if you return to original medicare within 12 months of joining if you joined a MAP when you were first eligible for medicare, you can choose from any medigap policy within the first year of joining

how is medigap different than medicare advantage plans

medicare advantage plans are ways to get medicare benefits, while medigap only supplements the costs of your original medicare benefits *medicare doesnt pay any cost for medigap policy*

selling medigap insurance

medigap policies must follow fed and state laws and must be identified as "medicare supplement insurance" Cost is usually the only difference between medigap policies with the same letter being sold by different ins companies insurance companies selling medigap are required to make plan A available. if they offer any other medigap policy they must also offer either plan C or F plans D and G bought after june 1 2010 have different benefits than if bought before june 1 2010 plans E, H, I, and J are no longer sold but if you already have one of those plans you can keep it

what is a medigap policy

private health insurance that helps supplement original medicare this means it helps pays for some health care costs that the original medicare doesnt cover (copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles) these are 'gaps' in medicare coverage

Plan A doesnt cover

skilled nursing facility Part A deductible Part B deductible Part B excess charges Foreign travel emergencies
